About The Position

This individual is responsible for supervising, planning and controlling all lab operations and personnel in the General Laboratory section of the Core Laboratory, which includes Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology and RIA technical disciplines. As well, responsible for Technical Supervision (technical and scientific oversight) for these specialty areas. The central supervisor is accessible to the laboratories at all times, either on site or by telephone. Advanced technical knowledge in the field supervised is required. Ability to work with front line staff in troubleshooting instrument problems as they occur. Technically competent in the quality control program, proficiency testing and process improvement program of the areas of testing. Responsible for regulatory compliance of the testing overseen. Competency of staff supervised for testing is part of the responsibility for this position, which may include corrective action if necessary. Requirements

  • Defined by CLIA (42CFR493.1461):
  • Option 1: Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution and one year of laboratory training or experience, or both, in high complexity testing.
  • Option 2: Associate's degree in a laboratory science, or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution or equivalent education and training, and at least 2 years of laboratory training or experience, or both, in high complexity testing.
  • Option 3: Served as a general supervisor of high complexity testing on or before September 1, 1992 and met the defined by CLIA 493.1461(4) requirements.
  • Option 4: Qualified as a technician with a high school diploma and successful completion of a HHS or approved military clinical lab training program, plus 2 additional years of lab training or experience, or both, in high complexity testing, either before or after completing the training program.
  • Option 5: Served as a general supervisor of high complexity testing on or before September 1, 1992 and met the defined by CLIA 493.1461(5) requirements.
  • Training and relevant experience in high complexity testing of Immunology, Chemistry, Hematology, and Microbiology.
  • At least four (4) years relevant experience in a high complexity laboratory setting.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to work with front line staff in troubleshooting instrument problems as they occur.
  • Technically competent in the quality control program, proficiency testing and process improvement program of the areas of testing.
  • When supervising the technical operations of the transfusion service, must have education or experience equivalent to an MT (ASCP) and at least 4 years experience, one of which is in transfusion medicine, under a qualified laboratory director.
