About The Position

The CEMS Engineer serves as a fleet technical owner for Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems (CEMS) across gas and coal generation facilities. The role leads complex troubleshooting, system reliability improvements, capital upgrade support, and fleet standardization for probes, analyzers, sample systems, DAHS platforms, alarming, and related data systems. The engineer works with plant Operations, Environmental Services, vendors, and project teams to ensure that CEMS equipment and data systems perform reliably and provide accurate information for compliance reporting. The position provides technical expertise and engineering support, coordinates routine activities and project planning, trains and guides lower-level employees, and develops or presents technical reports. It also supports compliance activities and system improvements, maintains design documentation and standards, and travels to generating stations as required. The position is posted at multiple grade levels; the listed minimum qualifications apply to the mid-level Engineer, with higher levels requiring increased education, skills, or experience.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering in an ABET-accredited program and typically two or more years of related engineering experience; a master's degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program may qualify candidates for entry at this level.
  • A bachelor's degree in Engineering Technology can satisfy the degree requirement if accompanied by a certified Professional Engineering (PE) license.
  • Acceptable alternative: a bachelor's degree in non-ABET-accredited engineering plus a master's degree or PhD in engineering from a university with an ABET-accredited bachelor's program. The posting also states that a VP or above may waive the requirement for a degree from a university with a non-ABET-accredited program.
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology (ABET preferred), or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Progressive experience with CEMS, process analyzers, power plant I&C, or closely related systems.
  • Working knowledge of CEMS QA/QC practices and operational aspects of 40 CFR Part 60 and/or Part 75, including implementation and system-side work.
  • Ability to independently troubleshoot complex hardware and data issues and communicate effectively with plant and corporate teams.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel periodically.
  • Strong knowledge and application of process/industrial control and monitoring systems and process instrumentation, including CEMS gas analyzers, sampling systems, flow monitors, and probes.
  • Background interpreting and following regulations, codes, and standards relevant to CEMS/DAHS systems.
  • Experience with DAHS configuration, administration, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience with PLC configuration and design.
  • Strong analytical, verbal, and written communication skills; ability to present and participate in panel discussions.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret technical writings and drawings, including SAMA logic diagrams, flow diagrams, one-line diagrams, electrical elementary diagrams, wiring diagrams, and other schematics.
  • Experience developing CEMS/DAHS system specifications and technical documentation.
  • Solid data-analysis skills using Excel.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in conditions that may include heat, cold, noise, dust, fumes, and operating equipment, and to follow station safety requirements and wear mandatory PPE.
  • Ability to meet the stated sedentary physical demand level, including occasionally exerting up to 10 pounds of force.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with computer networking, Modbus, OPC, and other communications protocols; packet inspection experience is preferred.
  • Experience with server management, thin clients, and computer-based instruments is strongly preferred.
  • SQL or similar tools for performance monitoring and investigations are preferred.
  • Familiarity with network concepts, protocols, and basic control-system cybersecurity is advantageous.
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering Technology or Engineering from an ABET-accredited program is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead complex troubleshooting and root-cause resolution for CEMS hardware, probes, sample systems, flow, opacity, mercury, particulate, analyzers, DAHS, and alarming issues involving computer/data systems and mechanical or chemical process systems.
  • Provide remote and on-site I&C support for installation, configuration, programming, troubleshooting, diagnosis, repair, and calibration of CEMS instrumentation and DAHS systems.
  • Serve as an I&C resource to single- and multi-discipline project teams evaluating and implementing CEMS/DAHS requirements, including capital upgrades and replacements.
  • Manage vendor and contractor relationships for CEMS/DAHS design, installation, calibration, maintenance, equipment, and software or services.
  • Develop and maintain design-basis documentation, standards, procedures, and fleet-wide CEMS standardization; prepare design-basis updates and cost estimates for new or major equipment replacements.
  • Support Environmental Services and plant Operations on CEMS/DAHS system function, configuration, performance, and regulatory implementation from the equipment and data-systems perspective.
  • Interpret and follow applicable regulations, codes, and standards relevant to CEMS/DAHS systems.
  • Provide technical leadership for Part 60/75 compliance support, including QA/QC programs, linearity, CGA, RATA support, and data validation from the system and equipment side.
  • Train and mentor plant and engineering personnel and create practical knowledge-transfer materials.
  • Identify systemic problems and implement solutions that improve reliability and reduce compliance risk.
  • Travel to generating stations as required.
  • Coordinate work activities of others and perform routine engineering activities with minimal direction.
  • Coordinate cost-forecasting inputs and use scheduling techniques for budget and planning activities; initiate corrective action when project objectives are not being met.
  • Develop, review, or present technical reports, studies, analyses, and improvement requisitions.
  • Work with stakeholders and peers to resolve conflicts and build consensus.
