About The Position

In the Wireless Technologies group, the Cellular Performance Engineer helps develop cellular and satellite connectivity technologies and works across departments to improve customer experiences with Apple products and services. The wireless software performance team explores ways to use cellular technologies to enable new services and products. This engineer builds cellular performance labs and contributes to the architecture, design, and enhancement of communication technologies and products, with a focus on end-user experience.

The role leads characterization of wireless software performance in laboratories and beyond. It develops expertise in cellular systems, RF frontends, hardware, and software by benchmarking power and performance for Apple products. The engineer acts as a liaison between technology and product engineering teams and helps safeguard end-user-facing quality. The position works cross-functionally to promote wireless communication technologies across Apple’s product portfolio and support data-driven design wins from prototyping through commercialization.

Requirements

• Experience working in a laboratory environment testing and benchmarking cellular data, voice, and application performance.
• Deep understanding of 3GPP cellular standards related to 5G NR and LTE.
• Demonstrated experience with higher-layer protocols such as TCP/IP.
• Strong ability to debug and analyze issues across all protocol stack layers (L1/L2/L3/Application) and RF frontends.
• Experience proposing software optimizations and improvements based on performance data.
• Experience working with cellular call boxes and channel emulators in a laboratory setting.
• Strong knowledge of Python scripting to automate laboratory performance test suites and develop tools and scripts for designing performance KPIs.

• Lead and drive characterization of wireless software performance in laboratories and beyond.

• Benchmark power and performance for Apple products across cellular systems, RF frontends, hardware, and software.
• Debug and analyze issues across L1, L2, L3, and application protocol layers, as well as RF frontends.
• Propose software optimizations and improvements based on performance data to enhance product quality and user experience.
• Automate laboratory performance test suites and develop tools and scripts to define KPIs for benchmarking product performance.
• Liaise between technology and product engineering teams as a gatekeeper of end-user-facing quality.
• Collaborate with engineering groups to promote wireless communication technologies across Apple’s product portfolio and support data-driven design wins from prototyping to commercialization.
