We are seeking a motivated, detail-oriented, and experienced NCDOT CEI Technician with a primary focus on Erosion and Sedimentation Control. The technician will be assigned to active construction sites in Asheville, NC and surrounding areas, responsible for verifying the quality and compliance of project activities according to NCDOT and Environmental Regulatory Agency standards. The role offers opportunities for skill advancement through on-the-job training and certification classes.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent AND four (4) years of construction-related experience OR associate’s degree in engineering technology, geomatics, or related field AND two (2) years of construction-related experience
  • NCDOT Erosion and Sediment Control Level II
  • Prior NCDOT Construction Inspection Experience with active materials testing certification
  • A strong sense of responsibility, a positive attitude, and the ability to work well independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to perform field measurements and complete mathematical calculations to determine areas and volumes, and convert between units
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Willingness to work both indoors and outdoors, in varying weather conditions
  • Willingness to work weekends and nights if required
  • Valid driver’s license and favorable driving record
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds

Nice To Haves

  • Associate Degree in Engineering or a related field

Responsibilities

  • Conduct on-site inspections of erosion and sediment control measures in accordance with approved plans, contract documents, and permit requirements.
  • Verify proper installation, phasing, and maintenance of Best Management Practices (BMPs), including silt fence, sediment basins, inlet protection, and check dams, in compliance with NCDOT Standard Specifications and project requirements.
  • Identify, document, and report deficiencies, non-compliance issues, or potential environmental impacts, and monitor corrective actions through resolution.
  • Maintain accurate daily inspection reports and erosion control compliance documentation.
  • Prepare and submit required inspection reports, including weekly and post-rain event NPDES reports, with supporting photos and detailed narratives, including corrective actions needed.
  • Maintain comprehensive records of site conditions, inspections, and corrective actions to support regulatory compliance and project documentation.
  • Monitor erosion control installation and maintenance activities to ensure compliance with approved plans, specifications, and environmental requirements.
  • Coordinate with NCDOT personnel, contractors, and environmental agencies to address and resolve compliance and construction issues in a timely manner.
  • Verify stabilization measures; including seeding, mulching, and matting, are properly installed and established per project requirements.
  • Monitor and enforce safety protocols and best practices on construction sites.
  • Report safety hazards and assist in the resolution of safety concerns.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with project stakeholders, including NCDOT representatives, contractors, and project team members.
  • Provide regular updates on project progress and address any concerns promptly.
