About The Position

Gresham Smith is seeking a CEI Inspector to join their Transportation Market team. This role involves observing and inspecting construction work, ensuring it aligns with specifications and contract documents. The inspector will maintain daily logs, report deviations, and coordinate with contractors and client personnel. This position contributes to creating healthy and thriving communities by ensuring the quality of essential infrastructure projects.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma (GED)
  • A minimum of 2 years of construction or inspection experience on roadway projects, or completion of a 2- or 4-year engineering technology or engineering program
  • Familiarity with construction techniques, design principles, ALDOT specifications, and documents
  • Ability or willingness to learn the use of tools and equipment such as air meters, slump cones, transit levels, and tape measures
  • Competence in computer use for data entry and reporting
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work independently
  • Effective listening and communication skills, both verbal and written, including good English language knowledge, grammar, composition, and spelling
  • Physical ability to frequently sit, use hands to operate tools or equipment, talk, see, hear, reach with hands and arms, walk, stand, and stoop
  • Frequently lift or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally more—reasonable accommodations may be made to support individuals with disabilities
  • Genuine curiosity, creativity, and a collaborative spirit

Nice To Haves

  • Experience on ALDOT or municipal roadway projects requiring daily records and reports on asphalt paving, concrete work, grading, structural work, and erosion control
  • Licenses/registrations/certifications such as ALDOT CEI certifications are a plus; may be required to participate in certification and training courses post-hire including OSHA, ALDOT, or client-specific required training
  • Strongly preferred completion of Level 1, and preferably Level 2, of the state’s Erosion Prevention and Sediment Control (EPSC) Training Program

Responsibilities

  • Observe and inspect construction work and prepare daily inspection reports and constructability reviews
  • Oversee daily construction activities including earthwork, erosion control, reinforced concrete, and equipment installation
  • Ensure construction progress aligns with specifications and contract documents by reviewing plans and analyzing moderate complexity shop drawings
  • Maintain daily job logs and report deviations from plans to management promptly
  • Participate in reviewing submittmits, assisting with Requests for Information (RFIs), and other related tasks
  • Coordinate with contractors, client personnel, and other stakeholders regarding inspection activities
  • Advise contractors on non-compliance or contract violations and collaborate on corrective actions
  • Verify that highway work zones and traffic control setups meet contract requirements
  • Assist in contractor evaluations and perform other duties as assigned
  • Use or learn necessary inspection tools and computer systems for accurate data collection and reporting
