About The Position

Performs a variety of manual laboring duties in the Department of Development & Infrastructure. This role involves tasks such as street cleaning, refuse collection, snow removal, and operating vehicles that require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL). The position also includes performing simple maintenance on equipment and assisting with infrastructure repairs like sidewalks, culverts, and sewers.

Requirements

High School Diploma or Equivalent.
Ability to read and write.
Ability to follow simple oral instructions.
Ability to perform strenuous manual labor.
Ability to withstand exposure to variable weather conditions and perform work outdoors.
Ability to meet the physical, mental, and visual standards of the job.
Ability and willingness to work safely.
Must possess a valid State of Michigan motor vehicle operator's license.
Possession of a Commercial Driver’s License “B” or higher.
Must meet the physical standards prescribed by Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT).
Must possess and carry a valid current Medical Examiner’s Certificate certifying physical fitness for driving in accordance with the State of Michigan Motor Carrier Safety Act.

Responsibilities

Sweep and clean streets and gutters.
Collect and load refuse into trucks or movable cans.
Rake leaves from streets and load into trucks.
Shovel snow and break ice from streets and load onto trucks.
Drive and operate a packer type truck collecting garbage, trash, compost, and other refuse.
Work from the rear of a truck loading refuse into the hopper.
Apply violation notices and operate mechanisms to load dumpsters and pack refuse.
Operate vehicles requiring a Commercial Driver's License (CDL B or higher).
Operate other non-driven power equipment.
Perform simple maintenance on equipment.
Pick up loose or spilled materials to ensure complete collection.
Keep trucks supplied with oil, gas, and water.
Report needed repairs on trucks.
Perform pick and shovel work on asphalt, concrete, and unpaved streets.
Perform simple tasks involved in building and repairing sidewalks, culverts, sewers, curbs, gutters, inlets, and catch basins.
Load and unload trucks and care for pipe, cement, and various materials.
Dig trenches and lay electrical underground ducts.
Skim clarifiers.
Wash signs and signal tanks.
Perform any related work as required.
