About The Position

Performs a variety of manual laboring duties in the Department of Development & Infrastructure. This role involves tasks such as street cleaning, refuse collection, snow removal, and operating vehicles that require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL). The position also includes performing simple maintenance on equipment and assisting with infrastructure repairs like sidewalks, culverts, and sewers.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • Ability to read and write.
  • Ability to follow simple oral instructions.
  • Ability to perform strenuous manual labor.
  • Ability to withstand exposure to variable weather conditions and perform work outdoors.
  • Ability to meet the physical, mental, and visual standards of the job.
  • Ability and willingness to work safely.
  • Must possess a valid State of Michigan motor vehicle operator's license.
  • Possession of a Commercial Driver’s License “B” or higher.
  • Must meet the physical standards prescribed by Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT).
  • Must possess and carry a valid current Medical Examiner’s Certificate certifying physical fitness for driving in accordance with the State of Michigan Motor Carrier Safety Act.

Responsibilities

  • Sweep and clean streets and gutters.
  • Collect and load refuse into trucks or movable cans.
  • Rake leaves from streets and load into trucks.
  • Shovel snow and break ice from streets and load onto trucks.
  • Drive and operate a packer type truck collecting garbage, trash, compost, and other refuse.
  • Work from the rear of a truck loading refuse into the hopper.
  • Apply violation notices and operate mechanisms to load dumpsters and pack refuse.
  • Operate vehicles requiring a Commercial Driver's License (CDL B or higher).
  • Operate other non-driven power equipment.
  • Perform simple maintenance on equipment.
  • Pick up loose or spilled materials to ensure complete collection.
  • Keep trucks supplied with oil, gas, and water.
  • Report needed repairs on trucks.
  • Perform pick and shovel work on asphalt, concrete, and unpaved streets.
  • Perform simple tasks involved in building and repairing sidewalks, culverts, sewers, curbs, gutters, inlets, and catch basins.
  • Load and unload trucks and care for pipe, cement, and various materials.
  • Dig trenches and lay electrical underground ducts.
  • Skim clarifiers.
  • Wash signs and signal tanks.
  • Perform any related work as required.
