About The Position

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s (PennDOT) Berks County Maintenance Organization is seeking a full-time CDL Equipment Operator to help maintain the county’s essential transportation infrastructure that keeps our communities safe and connected. This position supports highway and bridge maintenance through skilled equipment operation and a variety of field tasks. You will help maintain safe work practices, complete inspections, and carry out daily maintenance responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Possession of an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver's License or equivalent with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed.
  • Possession of an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations.
  • Ability to obtain an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders, and two additional pieces of construction equipment, within the probationary period.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain CDL endorsements and certifications necessary to operate specific pieces of equipment.
  • Ability to obtain an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) during the probationary period and continuously maintain it while employed in this job.
  • Ability to perform essential job functions.
  • Successful completion of the Transportation Equipment Operator Trainee Program; or Graduation from a Commercial Driver’s License Training School; or An equivalent combination of experience and training.

  • Ability to demonstrate successful operation of equipment with a manual transmission.

Responsibilities

  • Operate trucks, loaders, and other assigned construction and maintenance equipment
  • Maintain required CDL credentials and complete all daily pre and post operation inspections
  • Maintain accurate logs, activity records, and documentation related to daily operations and equipment use
  • Perform flagging duties to support safe movement of traffic during maintenance activities
  • Use hand tools to complete tasks such as cutting brush, repairing guiderails, cleaning culverts, and erecting signs
  • Perform minor repairs, complete preventative maintenance, and demonstrate equipment procedures to coworkers
  • Follow safety procedures, report hazards, and remain alert to risks in the work environment
