The CDL-A OTR Driver operates a dry van fleet across 27 states, covering areas from Colorado eastward except New England. Drivers typically travel 1,800 to 2,400 miles per week and are home every two to three weeks. The work includes drop-and-hook, preloaded freight, live loads, and live unloads; dispatch operates during both day and night, and weekends are worked. Drivers may request holidays off. Pay is $0.50 to $0.72 per mile based on verifiable experience, with an additional $15 for each stop except the first and last. Solo drivers average $1,200 to $1,800 per week and are paid weekly by direct deposit. For the first three months after the first solo dispatch, weekly pay is guaranteed to be at least $1,000. New CDL holders complete a paid mentor-training period of three to five weeks, approximately 200 to 250 hours, at $650 per week. Orientation lasts up to two days; the hotel is covered, the bus ticket is reimbursed, and $300 is paid once hired. Drivers with at least six months of OTR experience in the past 12 months may start solo after orientation. Drivers receive an assigned late-model truck, averaging about 1.5 years old, with an automatic or 10-speed transmission. Benefits begin after 30 days. Approved riders and one dog weighing under 40 pounds are allowed after training.
