About The Position

The Caterpillar Fleet Manager for Rental Operations is responsible for managing the health, performance, and lifecycle of the Caterpillar rental fleet. The position partners closely with rental sales, service/shop, and used-equipment teams but does not have direct reports.

Requirements

  • High School or equivalent
  • Understanding of rental fleet metrics, including time (physical) utilization, financial (dollar) utilization, maintenance and repair (M&R), and time to ready.
  • Solid understanding of, and/or hands-on experience with, used-equipment evaluation and valuation -- a key requirement of this role.
  • Caterpillar equipment appraisal experience, particularly with compact equipment (e.g., compact track loaders, skid steer loaders, mini/compact excavators, and backhoe loaders).
  • Working knowledge of Caterpillar and allied equipment lines, applications, and model classes.
  • Experience in equipment rental, dealership, or heavy-equipment operations.
  • Strong analytical skills and comfort working with fleet, utilization, and financial reporting (Excel, BI dashboards, and ERP/rental systems).
  • Familiarity with maintenance and service workflows and the rent-ready turnaround process.
  • Financial acumen -- understanding of ROI, residual values, depreciation, and total cost of ownership.
  • Strong communication and cross-functional coordination skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in business, supply chain, or a related field, or equivalent industry experience.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel to branches and rental yards as needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Caterpillar dealer and rental management systems (e.g., DBS, SalesLink, Texada/CloudLink, or similar).
  • Knowledge of Caterpillar rental programs, CVA/CSA agreements, and warranty processes.
  • Prior experience in fleet management, asset management, or used-equipment sales.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and drive fleet performance against core rental metrics: time (physical) utilization, financial (dollar) utilization, maintenance and repair (M&R) cost, and time to ready.
  • Manage fleet composition, mix, and right-sizing by category and class to align availability with market demand.
  • Coordinate the rent-ready / ready-line turnaround process with the service and shop teams to minimize time to ready on units returning from rent.
  • Track and manage maintenance and repair costs per unit; identify high-cost assets and recommend repair-versus-replace actions.
  • Lead used-equipment evaluation and disposition -- assess condition, hours/SMU, market value, and residuals to determine when to retain, cascade, or sell each unit.
  • Support fleet acquisition and replacement planning, including capital forecasting and optimal replacement timing based on age, hours, and lifecycle cost.
  • Maintain accurate fleet records (serial numbers, hours/SMU, location, and status) in the rental management and ERP systems.
  • Analyze utilization and financial reporting to surface trends, underperforming units, and improvement opportunities.
  • Partner with rental sales and rental reps on availability, substitutions, and special fulfillment needs.
  • Ensure fleet compliance with Caterpillar programs, warranty, and applicable maintenance/service agreements.
