About The Position

The Category Merchant sets the strategy and drives growth for assigned categories, including product selection, vendor negotiations, promotions, and leadership of the merchandise team. The role is responsible for category performance, profitability, and customer experience, and works with cross-functional teams to execute merchandising strategies. This is a hybrid role based at BJ’s Club Support Center in Marlborough, Massachusetts: Tuesday through Thursday are in-office days, while Monday and Friday are remote.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in business or an operations-related field.
• At least 4 years of related merchandising or category management experience.
• Negotiation skills and decision-making ability.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Proven analytical and organizational skills.

Responsibilities

• Drive growth, category profitability, and customer experience for assigned categories.
• Select products and develop competitive merchandise assortment plans that achieve financial objectives.
• Negotiate pricing and terms with new, existing, and prospective vendors.
• Build strong relationships with vendors and adapt negotiation approaches as needed.
• Oversee sales and margin plans and sales forecasts for assigned categories.
• Communicate merchandising strategies to cross-functional teams to support proper and timely execution.
• Connect strategies to business operations and maintain an understanding of operational goals and challenges.
• Manage pricing for assigned categories, including price indexing and achievement of price targets.
• Collaborate with the Marketing team on pricing, promotional, and campaign strategies.
• Monitor merchandising performance and respond promptly to business changes to capitalize on opportunities and mitigate risks.
• Provide leadership, training, actionable feedback, and professional development opportunities to the merchandise team.
• Establish and maintain credibility and responsiveness in the marketplace.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
