About The Position

The Cat Scan Technologist is responsible for reviewing patient history and physician's orders, educating patients about procedures, and preparing and administering contrast media when ordered. They continuously monitor patient condition, prepare equipment and supplies, select appropriate exposure factors, and implement safety and quality control procedures. The technologist analyzes imaging results, takes action to resolve quality issues, and enters, transmits, and reports scan results. This role requires providing coverage for other outreach sites in Mt. Pleasant, North Charleston, and West Ashley.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited Radiologic Technology program.
  • Registered or Registry eligible in an advanced modality.
  • Current registration in Radiology from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist.
  • Current licensure from the South Carolina Radiation Quality Standards Association.
  • Registered in Advanced Imaging Modality or registry eligible.
  • Will become registered within one year of eligibility.
  • BLS certification.
  • 0-2 years of modality specific experience.
  • Must be registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
  • ARRT CT Registration required within 1 year in position.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required, either a certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA recognized equivalent) or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.
  • Ability to evaluate and appropriately respond to verbal and non-verbal communication from patients’ diverse stages of development.
  • Completes procedures following approved procedure protocols with sufficient speed to promote departmental efficiency.
  • Completes required documentation for each procedure, both computer and handwritten.
  • Demonstrates technical competence in the operation of imaging equipment, and the use of procedure related supplies.
  • Complete knowledge of related physics, anatomy, imaging techniques and medical terminology.
  • Introduces self to patients, explains the procedure, assists the patient at the end of the procedure and explains the next steps.
  • Maintains a professional demeanor in attitude, appearance, and communication.
  • Obtains pertinent history, verifies orders, and communicates effectively with co-workers and other clinic staff to provide excellent patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Review patient history and physician's orders.
  • Educate patient regarding procedures, equipment, and exam to ensure patient's understanding and cooperation.
  • Prepare and administer contrast media and/or medications within scope of practice.
  • Monitor patient condition continually and respond to changes in status as appropriate.
  • Prepare equipment and supplies.
  • Select appropriate exposure factors and imaging parameters.
  • Implement safety standards and perform appropriate quality control procedures on equipment.
  • Troubleshoot, resolve, and/or report equipment malfunctions as necessary.
  • Position patient and perform imaging procedure(s).
  • Analyze results and identify issues with the quality of imaging results.
  • Take appropriate action to resolve image quality issues, including repositioning patient and repeating procedure.
  • Enter, transmit, and report scan results.
  • Provide coverage for other outreach sites located in Mt. Pleasant, North Charleston, and West Ashley.
  • Perform radiologic examinations timely, accurately and safely for radiologist interpretation.
  • Assure schedule does not fall behind; exam delays are communicated to all stakeholders.
  • Ensure exams are routed to PACS for interpretation as soon as complete.
  • Perform exams per exam protocol using appropriate anatomical markers and positioning aids.
  • Ensure images are free of artifact and motion.
  • Screen all patients for patient and technologist identification, patient history, and safety protocols.
  • Review medical history for exam indications and contraindications.
  • Review schedule / patient record 3-5 days prior to scheduled appointment.
  • Evaluate for exam / facility appropriateness and contraindications for exam.
  • Work with Radiologists, referring physicians, and clinics to address any issues prior to patient arriving for exam.
  • Assure the radiology suite and adjacent clinical and common areas are prepared to receive patients/visitors.
  • Ensure all needed equipment is available and in working order.
  • Perform quality control per ACR and manufacturer – report ASAP any equipment errors or downtime directly to service vendor and manager, as well as clinical staff.
  • Ensure all needed medical supplies are ordered and stowed.
  • Assure exam room and patient areas are clean and equipment is cleaned per manufacturer, OSHA, DHEC and MUSC infection control guidelines.
  • Report any environment issues timely to manager.
  • Consistently look for ways to improve safety by analyzing workflows, work area and identifying barriers.
  • Use PSI reporting system.
  • Actively participate in group meetings by offering your comments and suggestions.
  • Address problems of patient care as they arise and make decisions to appropriately resolve the problem, involve appropriate supervisor or other member of patient's care team as necessary.
