About The Position

Cat Scan Technologists review patient history and physician's orders. They educate patients regarding procedures, equipment, and exams to ensure understanding and cooperation. When ordered, they prepare and administer contrast media and/or medications within their scope of practice, and continuously monitor patient condition, responding to changes as appropriate. Technologists prepare equipment and supplies, select appropriate exposure factors and imaging parameters, and implement safety standards and quality control procedures. They troubleshoot and report equipment malfunctions. They position patients, perform imaging procedures, analyze results, identify and resolve image quality issues, and enter, transmit, and report scan results. This role requires providing coverage for other outreach sites in Mt. Pleasant, North Charleston, and West Ashley.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited Radiologic Technology program.
  • Registered or Registry eligible in an advanced modality.
  • Current registration in Radiology from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist.
  • Current licensure from the South Carolina Radiation Quality Standards Association.
  • Registered in Advanced Imaging Modality or registry eligible.
  • Will become registered within one year of eligibility.
  • BLS certification.
  • 0-2 years of modality specific experience.
  • ARRT CT Registration required within 1 year in position.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required, either a certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA recognized equivalent) or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.
  • Ability to evaluate and appropriately respond to verbal and non-verbal communication from patients’ diverse stages of development.
  • Completes procedures following approved procedure protocols with sufficient speed to promote departmental efficiency.
  • Completes required documentation for each procedure, both computer and handwritten.
  • Demonstrates technical competence in the operation of imaging equipment, and the use of procedure related supplies.
  • Complete knowledge of related physics, anatomy, imaging techniques and medical terminology.
  • Introduces self to patients, explains the procedure, assists the patient at the end of the procedure and explains the next steps.
  • Maintains a professional demeanor in attitude, appearance, and communication.
  • Obtains pertinent history, verifies orders, and communicates effectively with co-workers and other clinic staff to provide excellent patient care.
  • Continuous requirements are to perform job functions while standing, walking and sitting.
  • Ability to bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, fully use both hands and legs, possess good finger dexterity, perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders, reach in all directions.
  • Ability to be qualified physically for respirator use, initially and as required.
  • Maintain 20/40 vision corrected, see and recognize objects close at hand and at a distance, work in a latex safe environment and work indoors.
  • Frequently lift, lower, push and pull and/or carry objects weighing 50 lbs (+/-) unassisted, exert up to 50 lbs of force, lift from 36” to overhead 25 lbs.
  • Infrequently work in dusty areas and confined/cramped spaces.

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform radiologic examinations timely, accurately, and safely for radiologist interpretation.
  • Assure schedule does not fall behind; exam delays are communicated to all stakeholders.
  • Ensure exams are routed to PACS for interpretation as soon as complete.
  • Perform exams per protocol using appropriate anatomical markers and positioning aids, ensuring images are free of artifact and motion.
  • Screen all patients for identification, history, and safety protocols.
  • Review medical history for exam indications and contraindications.
  • Review schedule/patient record 3-5 days prior to scheduled appointment to evaluate for exam/facility appropriateness and contraindications.
  • Work with Radiologists, referring physicians, and clinics to address any issues prior to patient arrival.
  • Assure the radiology suite and adjacent clinical and common areas are prepared to receive patients/visitors.
  • Ensure all needed equipment is available and in working order, and perform quality control per ACR and manufacturer guidelines.
  • Report any equipment errors or downtime ASAP to the service vendor and manager, as well as clinical staff.
  • Ensure all needed medical supplies are ordered and stowed.
  • Assure exam room and patient areas are clean and equipment is cleaned per manufacturer, OSHA, DHEC, and MUSC infection control guidelines.
  • Report any environment issues timely to the manager.
  • Consistently look for ways to improve safety by analyzing workflows and work areas, and identifying barriers.
  • Use the PSI reporting system ('See something, say something').
  • Actively participate in group meetings by offering comments and suggestions.
  • Address problems of patient care as they arise and make decisions to appropriately resolve the problem, involving appropriate supervisor or other members of the patient's care team as necessary.
