About The Position

The Strait Regional Centre for Education (SRCE) is seeking qualified candidates for Casual Janitor positions for the 2026-2027 school year across all SRCE locations. The SRCE is part of the public education system in Nova Scotia, established on April 1, 2018, to support student learning, achievement, well-being, and overall success. With approximately 1,166 employees, the SRCE operates 20 schools and 375 pre-primary programs across the counties of Antigonish, Guysborough, Inverness, and Richmond. This position falls under the CUPE Local 955 job classification.

Requirements

  • Good physical health to perform janitorial and cleaner duties, and the ability to lift heavy equipment (up to 50 lbs)
  • First Aid and WHMIS certification or willingness to obtain
  • Effective interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both the written and oral form
  • Willingness to work as part of the school support team
  • Successful completion of Regional Centre for Education Sponsored Training Program for cleaner classification or willingness to participate in program.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of commercial cleaning methods and procedures, general repair and groundskeeping

Responsibilities

  • Clean, on a daily or as scheduled basis, all assigned areas of the school in accordance with established practices and standards.
  • Obtain and maintain sufficient supplies on hand to carry out duties and responsibilities.
  • Report any breakdowns, accidents, damage or vandalism to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Secure all doors and windows whenever the building is vacated and activate security system if last person to vacate building.
  • Perform floor care duties, such as stripping, sealing, waxing, burnishing, etc.
  • Perform duties in compliance with school, Operations Department, and Regional Education Office policies and procedures including occupational health, safety, work routines, WHMIS, and evacuation plans and the laws of the Province of Nova Scotia.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
