About The Position

Applicants seeking short-term or part-time work with the University Hawai'i may apply for Casual Hire positions, which include administrative, professional, and technical (APT) or instructional-type positions. Because of the temporary nature of these appointments, Casual Hire employees are not eligible for most benefits as provided to regular BOR and Civil Service employees such as paid leave and holidays. Casual Hire appointments may last for up to 89 days for full-time employees, and up to 1 calendar year for part-time employees. This position is for a Graduate Student Assistant Coach for Football at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. The appointment is contingent upon the applicant demonstrating acceptance into a University of Hawai‘i at Manoa Graduate Program for Fall 2026. Hours of work per week cannot exceed 19.75.

Requirements

  • Must be classified degree-seeking student in a Masters program under the UHM Office of Graduate Education.
  • Be a Graduate School student enrolled in at least six (6) credit hours per semester at the University of Hawai‘i, Manoa. (International students must take 8 or more credits (full-time) which is a requirement to have an I-20).
  • Maintain the requirements of a Graduate School student including Grade Point Average requirements.
  • Be in good academic standing.
  • Per NCAA by-law 11.01.3 Coach, Graduate Assistant – Bowl Subdivision Football (FBS). A graduate assistant coach is any coach who has received a baccalaureate degree and has either received his or her first baccalaureate degree or has exhausted athletics eligibility (whichever occurs later) within the previous seven (7) years and qualifies for appointment as a graduate assistant under the policies of the institution.
  • Graduation from an accredited four year college or university.
  • Knowledge of football as played at the Division I level.
  • Familiar with Microsoft Office applications – Word, Excel, PPT.
  • Familiar with Internet Explorer and Acrobat Reader.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Resourceful, diligent, flexible.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to manage time wisely.
  • Knowledge of football video editing.
  • Ability to create cut-ups and reports with a XOS Video Editing System and ability to combine edits with Microsoft applications for presentations or on a non-linear platform editing system.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays and travel.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with people of diverse backgrounds.
  • First Aid, CPR and AED certification by the employment start date.
  • Computer, cell phone, and social media technology competency.

Nice To Haves

  • Division I football playing experience.

Responsibilities

  • Under the supervision of the Head Football Coach or designee, work with the assistant coaches to complete office work and complete day to day, ongoing, or recurrent tasks and/or projects.
  • Assist and participate with coaching practice and intercollegiate competitions.
  • Teach necessary skills from the basic fundamentals to the techniques and strategies of team play.
  • Monitor assigned regions with regards to recruiting information with social media and various recruiting websites and provide information to Head Coach or designee.
  • Promote and foster a positive team environment, appropriate behavior, and sportsmanship by team members.
  • Responsible for the conduct of team members both on and off the field.
  • Promote and maintain an environment where the physical, mental, social and academic well being of all program participants are a priority.
  • Assist in the filming of practice, game, and other football related video, computer work, preparation of video scouting for future opponents on XOS video editing system.
  • Prepare, produce, revise, copy and/or compile emails, memos, faxes, documents, notes, Power Point presentations, spreadsheets, rosters, etc.
  • Answer phones, direct calls and/or take and route messages.
  • Responsible for performing the duties of a Campus Security Authority as defined by University policy and federal law with regards to the Clery Act.
  • Maintain collaborative working relationships with administrators and coaches in the department, other college offices, and appropriate relationships with members of the media, donors, and other individuals interested in the sports program.
  • Maintains confidentiality to include but not limited to information, files and records that the incumbent may obtain or possess, in accordance with federal and state laws and University of Hawaii policies.
  • Know, recognize, and comply with the laws, policies, rules, and regulations governing the University of Hawaii and its employees, and the rules of the NCAA and affiliated conferences as now constituted or as may be amended in the future.
  • Immediately advise the Director of Athletics or designee if you have reasonable cause to believe violations, whether by employees or students, have occurred or will occur.
  • Attend functions, complete projects and other tasks as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.
