About The Position

The Cook prepares and serves nutritious meals as outlined on menus in accordance with applicable food service and safety regulations. This role is for a casual/on-call position with weekend availability, working in a kitchen within a residential social services facility in Vancouver's downtown eastside. The facility serves multiple programs including community meals, shelters, addiction treatment, a correctional residential facility, and low-income housing.

Requirements

  • Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Ability to provide an original copy of a Background Check that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army.
  • Criminal Record Review Program clearance is required.
  • High school completion.
  • Current certification in WHMIS, FoodSafe, Naloxone training, First Aid with CPR, Mental Health First Aid, and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training (or willingness to be trained).
  • Two (2) years of prior related experience, including institutional kitchen experience or equivalent.
  • Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility.
  • Must demonstrate a positive attitude towards the homeless and individuals with substance abuse and concurrent problems, including mental health concerns.
  • Basic interpersonal and communication skills, including fluency in verbal and written English.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of special diet preparations is an asset.
  • Additional language skills are an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares meals, including for special dietary needs of the residents.
  • Adapts work practices within specific parameters to ensure the efficient delivery of food services.
  • Makes use of and decides on best use of resources, including donations to minimize waste.
  • Follows guidelines for the safety and security of food and equipment and monitors practices to ensure adherence.
  • May perform some employee supervisory duties in the absence of the Food Services Manager and Kitchen Supervisor.
  • May provide orientation or occasional supervision to volunteers or WEP participants during Community Meals.
  • Perform new client orientation for cleaning kitchen equipment.
  • May order food supplies.
  • Maintain a high level of cleanliness at all times within the kitchen and storage areas.
  • Assists in donation and delivery sorting.
  • May help serving food when needed.
  • Perform other duties and other accountabilities as required and assigned by the Food Services Manager and/or Kitchen Supervisor.
