About The Position

We are currently inviting applications for a Casual Cook II to join our Food Servies Team. This posting is for a current permanent part-time vacancy within our Food Services Department. This position is unionized and governed by the CUPE Collective Agreement.

Requirements

  • Chef training or culinary management diploma from a program that meets the standards established by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities.
  • Minimum 2 year cooking experience in an institutional setting with a minimum of 2 years prep-cook experience.
  • Must be able to fully communicate (reading, writing and speaking) in English.
  • Current Food Handlers Certificate from Toronto Public Health
  • Satisfactory Police Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening issued within the last six (6) months, in accordance with the Fixing Long-Term Care Act, 2021.
  • Compliance with Villa Colombo Toronto immunization and tuberculosis screening requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Red Seal preferred.
  • Cooks with institutional, health care, restaurant, or hospitality cooking experience (in place of the identified educational/training requirements) to allow them to perform the duties required of the position may be considered.
  • Knowledge of Italian Cuisine, Italian Cooking Techniques and Language an Asset

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a safe environment for the residents and clients.
  • Ensure a healthy and safe work environment by taking action to address unsafe conditions and procedures.
  • Responsible for clean and orderly storage areas.
  • Maintain a safe environment for the residents and clients.

  • Prepares food for residents as per prescribed menus and special diets in conjunction with the Dietitian or Food Services Manager in the traditional Italian cuisine.
  • Prepares food for other related programs and functions such as the cafeteria, Meal on Wheels, Elderly Persons Centre, Frail Elderly Center and Special functions, as assigned.
  • Minimizes food wastage and spoilage by decreasing amount of leftover and by practicing ‘Fifo’ method of supplies.
  • Responsible for distribution of correct amount of meals to each food truck according to the number of residents on each floor.
  • Checks next day’s menu/daily production sheets and does advance preparation as required.
  • Follows the Safe Food Handling Practices as outlined by HACCP system for food preparation, storage and handling of leftovers.
  • Participates in departmental education programs and develop job skills so responsibilities are completed in a safe, efficient manner.
  • Maintains clean equipment and work areas by washing and sanitizing tables and shelves, returning soiled pots and utensils to the pot washing area.
  • Responsible for cleaning and sanitizing equipment used in the work assignments.
  • Ensures safe and sanitary storage of knives and cutting boards.
  • May be required to assist in the direction of kitchen staff in the absence of the Supervisor.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
