About The Position

The Caster position is responsible for operating mill and casting machines to produce customer products meeting company production and quality standards. This role involves maintaining equipment, ensuring safety, and contributing to process improvements. The schedule for this position is the 5th Shift, which is a 12-hour shift running from Friday 7:30 PM to 7:30 AM, Saturday 7:30 PM to 7:30 AM, and Sunday 7:30 PM to 7:30 AM.

Requirements

  • Must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

  • Experience in an industrial environment is preferred.
  • Some industrial factory or production experience.
  • Excellent hand-eye coordination.
  • Proficiency operating technical machinery.
  • Good physical condition.

  • Good written and verbal communication.
  • High School Graduate and or GED.

  • Experience in a metals industrial setting preferred.

  • Post High School or vocational education desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain equipment in good operating condition, including completing Operators Basic Care at the start of each shift.
  • Operate mill machines.
  • Perform production and time entry in the MESA computer system.
  • Understand and adhere to Job Instructions Breakdown (JIB) for operations within the scope of duty.
  • Ensure autonomous maintenance of equipment used and maintain housekeeping.
  • Set up and operate casting machines in the assigned work area to produce customer products meeting company production and quality standards.
  • Mount, align, and secure molds, adjust, and operate the casting process.
  • Review and ensure controls are accurate, and adjust as needed.
  • Ensure temperatures of molds and metal are within operating specifications.
  • Clean, prepare, and maintain molds for production, including blast cleaning when necessary.
  • Adjust the level of molten metal entering molds.
  • Skim and shovel copper slag off the top of a molten metal furnace.
  • Take and check samples from furnaces.
  • Visually check and measure parts for defects, adjust machines or molds, spray molds, clean or change pins to bring parts into specifications.
  • Operate a forklift to fill hoppers with scrap metal.
  • Perform operator maintenance on machines and molds, and perform minor repairs as needed.
  • Notify maintenance or shift supervision of major problems.
  • Notify shift supervision of shortages of tools and fixtures.
  • Plan material usage and ensure adequate flow of materials to minimize downtime.
  • Operate material handling equipment to move full baskets of parts and bring in empty baskets.
  • Prepare and repair ladles.
  • Remove solidified copper from pouring spouts as required.
  • Control pouring station in which copper alloys are cast into ingots (cake).
  • Regulate flow of molten metal from the melting furnace into launder feeding casting molds of casting unit by adjusting spindles at the bottom of the trough.
  • Control cooling conditions of casting unit by maintaining a constant level of metal in molds and regulating a series of valves to spray water against molds to produce ingots (cake) of uniform crystalline structure.
  • Recommend changes to the production process to improve productivity and quality and reduce scrap.
  • Complete and maintain all required paperwork, records, documentation, etc.
  • Maintain departmental housekeeping standards.
  • Wear Personal Protective Equipment as required: Safety glasses and shoes, hearing protection and gloves, long pants and covering for the upper torso. Caster PPE includes requirements include wear of full cover Uniform (flame resistant fabric), safety shoes/caster boots, aluminized leg spats, face shield, high temper hard hat and aluminized gloves (as required).
  • Prepare and send metal samples to the lab for analysis.
  • Calculate and make adjustments, weighing additions to heats, as required to bring chemistry to specified levels.
  • Maintain accurate records of melt activity and information.
  • Operate Overhead Crane to remove copper cake.
  • Perform Safety Observations; provide feedback of production or safety issues on machine.
