About The Position

The Cashier performs all point-of-sale functions, including recording and collecting for customer transactions. This role involves direct customer interaction, operating point-of-sale equipment, maintaining the cleanliness of the front end, and assisting customers with their needs.

Requirements

  • Must be able to Stand/Walk for prolonged periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift items weighing up to 50 lbs., consistently and repetitively.
  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Must have an understanding of basic math, and have the ability to count, add and subtract efficiently.
  • Must have an understanding and the ability to operate a Personal Computer.
  • Must be able to operate all required equipment specific to assigned department.
  • Make eye contact with every customer.
  • Acknowledge each customer with a smile and a positive attitude.
  • Ask each customer if they need assistance.
  • Avoid use of “negative” words.
  • Remind all customers of all the services Stanford’s offers.
  • Learn the customer’s name and use it.
  • Tell customers “Thank You” whether they purchase or not.

Responsibilities

  • Perform all point-of-sale functions, including recording and collecting for customer transactions.
  • Operate all point-of-sale equipment, including cash register and terminal with sufficient speed and accuracy.
  • Visually verify the contents of carts and containers.
  • Promote the ‘Best Reward Program”.
  • Maintain cleanliness and appearance of the front end of the store, including the customer service area, retrieving carts from the parking lot, monitoring outdoor trash cans, and cleaning glass on entry/exit doors.
  • Read and comprehend distributed material such as bulletins, circulars, manufacturer’s literature, and store policies and procedures manuals.
  • Effectively communicate with customers, management, and employees.
  • Receive incoming phone calls, make phone calls to customers and vendors, and use the store intercom.
  • Watch for shoppers who may need assistance and provide needed advice or information, page sales associates, or walk customers to the sales desk or area they are looking for.
  • Greet customers as they enter or leave the store and assist those who need advice, information or directions.
  • Accurately record customer purchases on the cash register and provide the customer with a receipt.
  • Scan each individual item (including identical items).
  • Count all items on lumber carts and check the shelf underneath the shopping cart for additional merchandise.
  • Check inside all tool boxes, trash cans, and opened boxes for concealed items and scan all items individually.
  • Ensure price overrides are accompanied by a sales slip signed by an authorized individual.
  • Use correct procedures for customer returns and defective merchandise.
  • Be aware of sale merchandise, its price, and location in the store.
  • Accurately complete credits.
  • Attend cashier meetings as assigned by management.
  • Complete tasks assigned by Supervisor and members of Management.
