About The Position

The Centralized Intake Office of the Utah Division of Child and Family Services (DCFS) serves an important function in the Division by being the first point of contact for callers with information about children at risk, and is looking to fill Caseworker I / Social Service Worker positions. The Centralized Intake Office operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. These shifts have been approved for remote work within the State of Utah. A position’s eligibility for hybrid work (both in-office and telework), or remote work, is established by agency management and is subject to change at their discretion at any time and for any reason. The State of Utah requires all employees to physically work inside the State of Utah Boundaries. These positions will be filled as a Caseworker I or Social Service Worker depending upon the qualifications of the applicant.

Requirements

  • Caseworker I: Understands human development across the lifespan, and resources in the community, and has the ability to provide support and interventions in a culturally responsive way.
  • Is adept at interacting professionally with all levels of management while managing a diversified workload and challenging situations.
  • Deals with people in a manner which shows sensitivity, tact, and professionalism.
  • Communicates effectively, clearly, and concisely verbally and in writing.
  • Has four years of full-time education OR professional work experience related to working with children, parents, and/or families, OR a combination of education and professional work experience.
  • Possesses a current valid driver's license.
  • Social Service Worker: Holds an SSW or higher or higher licensure in good standing (required by statute UCA58-60-103).
  • Understands human development across the lifespan, and resources in the community, and has the ability to provide support and interventions in a culturally responsive way.
  • Is adept at interacting professionally with all levels of management while managing a diversified workload and challenging situations.
  • Deals with people in a manner which shows sensitivity, tact, and professionalism.
  • Communicates effectively, clearly, and concisely verbally and in writing.
  • Has four years of professional work experience related to working with children, parents, and/or families or a combination of education and experience to equal four years.
  • Possesses a current valid driver's license.

Nice To Haves

  • Completed an internship with DCFS
  • Four years or more years of professional work experience related to working with children, parents, and/or families, OR hold a bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, sociology, family and human development, human services, criminal justice, bachelor of science in health education and promotion, or closely related degree, OR a combination of professional work experience and education
  • Customer service experience in a call center environment

Responsibilities

  • Receive and process referrals for child abuse and neglect, received through the intake phone line, or by email.
  • Document the information into the SAFE system and determine whether the information received meets the criteria for a child abuse and neglect investigation.
  • When the information is determined to meet the criteria and a case is opened in the SAFE system, assign the case to the appropriate supervisor and in some cases, call the appropriate child welfare staff member to pass the information along for an immediate response.
  • Answer calls received through the child abuse and neglect hotline.
  • Gather all necessary information from the referent to process the referral.
  • Document all information into SAFE.
  • Determine if a CPS or other type of case shall be opened using practice guideline definitions, staffings, and other methods.
  • Determine which priority will be assigned to the CPS case.
  • Process police reports to document into SAFE and determine if they meet the criteria to open a CPS case.
  • Search databases for information.
  • Open cases in the SAFE system.
  • Assign cases to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Answer questions about available resources and agency practices.
  • Provide agency and resource information to the public.
  • May include performing 24-hour-on-call services as needed under supervisor's direction.
  • 24-hour on-call service assignments may be based on, and subject to, geographic employment location and/or agency demand.
