About The Position

The Carpenter performs rough and finished carpentry as well as installation and repair of architectural hardware. Will also perform mechanical repairs and maintain hospital mechanical and plumbing equipment throughout MMC-NI facilities. This role reports to the Engineering Supervisor and works closely with the Engineering Staff, Environmental Services, and all Departmental Customers. The primary customer groups are Patients, Visitors, and Staff. The Carpenter follows standard work or process to ensure timely completion of projects, performs rough and finished carpentry including surface preparation for finishes and applies wall vinyl, and maintains or replaces hardware including lock assemblies. The role also involves employing troubleshooting and diagnostic skills for building systems and equipment, maintaining building supply stock, and performing data entry on departmental software. Teamwork, adherence to medical center policies, and professional conduct reflecting the mission and values of Mercy Medical Center are essential. Continuous self-monitoring for improvement, communication following guiding behaviors, and participation in training and process improvement initiatives are expected. The Carpenter provides competent patient care, adapts to age-specific needs, and engages in personal and professional growth. Responsibilities also include maintaining confidentiality and HIPAA regulations, and responding promptly and professionally to patient, visitor, and staff needs.

Requirements

  • High school education required
  • Four to five years previous experience as a carpenter and mechanical systems is required.
  • Knowledge of general construction trades, materials, applications, and methods
  • Ability to read blueprints and schematics
  • Able to use all types of woodworking power tools
  • Able to work from ladders and scaffolds
  • Must be able to wear appropriate mask and be fit tested on an annual basis.
  • Valid Drivers license required.
  • Completes Mandatory Reporting: Child and Dependent Adult Abuse requirement within 6 months of hire and renews this requirement every 5 years.

Responsibilities

  • Follows standard work or process to insure completion of projects in a timely manner
  • Performs rough and finished carpentry including preparing surfaces for painting or other finishes and applies wall vinyl. Modifying existing structures to accommodate installations.
  • Maintains or replaces hardware including lock assemblies.
  • Effectively employs appropriate troubleshooting and diagnostic skills in order to repair and maintain building system and equipment.
  • Maintains stock of building supplies to complete routine projects.
  • Performs data entry on departmental preventive maintenance and work order software
  • Works as a team member to accomplish departmental activities.
  • Supports and abides by all medical center, departmental, and safety policies and procedures. Proactively identifies safety concerns surrounding the work environment.
  • Acts in a professional manner reflecting the mission, philosophy and values of Mercy Medical Center - North Iowa and the Sisters of Mercy.
  • Performs other responsibilities as requested by the Engineering Supervisor.
  • Constantly monitors own performance and identifies ways to improve.

  • Takes an active role in enhancing ability to carry out job functions through personal and professional/job-related growth and development and participates in medical center and/or departmental education programs.
