About The Position

The Illinois Department of Corrections is looking for a candidate to perform general carpentry work and carpentry functions throughout the facility and grounds. In addition, this position will guide and direct individuals in custody assigned to the carpenter crew, and maintain and clean carpenter shop and tools. Requirements

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of high school.
  • Requires completion of an approved apprenticeship program to qualify as a journey level carpenter.
  • Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen.
  • The use of unauthorized drugs by an employee, regardless of position held, is prohibited.
  • Required to utilize digital technology, tools, platforms, and processes in managing and supporting various digital enhancements for greater efficiency, productivity, and digital transformation efforts within the department.
  • This position requires the ability to work at heights, including on ladders, scaffolding, aerial lifts, or elevated platforms, while adhering to all safety regulations and using appropriate fall protection measures.
  • Applicants are required to abide by all vaccine and/or other medical standards as set out by the employer.

Nice To Haves

  • Prefers at least four (4) years of experience working with the tools, materials, methods and standard practices of the trade.
  • Prefers at least four (4) years of experience using tools and machines of the trade.
  • Prefers at least four (4) years of experience instructing and directing unskilled, beginner workers in the trade.
  • Prefers at least four (4) years of experience making simple arithmetical computations and bulk estimates for materials needed.
  • Prefers completion of current OSHA 10 training or higher.

Responsibilities

  • Performs general carpentry work in the repair, maintenance, construction, and alteration of walls, doors, furniture, roofing, and other wooden articles or structures.
  • Performs carpentry functions throughout the facility and grounds.
  • Guides and directs individuals in custody assigned to the carpenter crew.
  • Maintains and cleans carpenter shop and tools.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
