About The Position

Under general supervision, this position leads and performs skilled maintenance carpentry work in City facilities or in fabricating/repairing City furniture. The purpose of this Carpenter Lead position is to provide guidance and supervision to the team involved in construction projects. The Carpenter Lead’s responsibilities include assigning and explaining tasks to the construction team, responding to clients’ requests for emergency repairs, and regularly inspecting work done by the construction team to ensure that it conforms to certain specifications. Requirements

Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
Knowledge of materials, equipment, and procedures used in skilled carpentry work sufficient to perform tasks and train other personnel in the performance of tasks.
Knowledge of applicable building codes.
Skill in reading and understanding blueprints.
Skill in estimating time, costs, and materials needed for carpentry projects.
Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with City employees and the public.
Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus three (3) years of experience as a journeyman carpenter.
One (1) additional year of experience as indicated above may substitute for one (1) year of the required education with a maximum substitution of four (4) years.
Texas Class C Operator’s License or ability to obtain one within ninety (90) calendar days of hire.
Ability to travel to more than one work location.
Tasks involve bending, lifting, walking, carrying or using a force equal to lifting up to thirty-five (35) pounds.
Must be physically and mentally able to communicate, respond and work with participant’s needs and safety issues; and tolerate loud noise associated with enthusiasm and excitement.
Ability to adapt to a variety of conditions such as daily walking, climbing, standing, balancing, kneeling, stooping, running, bending, crawling, stretching and reaching; and frequently walk and sit when leading various recreational activities.
Work outdoors in any and all types of weather and/or inclement conditions; and in confined spaces.
Work environment includes inside, and outside environmental conditions, extreme temperatures, and hazards associated with equipment operation including fumes, oils, gases, and mists.

This position requires a valid Texas Class “C” Driver’s License or the ability to acquire one by your hire date. Aerial Lifts 29 CFR 1926.453 Operator Training Certificate OR the ability to receive it within 6 months of employment.

Responsibilities

Records data concerning work activities on appropriate form or log.
Operates various power saws (radial arm, skill, etc.), drills, buffers, grinders, sanders, etc. by hand.
Fabricates wooden furniture and accessories (cabinets, tables, shelves, credenzas, display cases, frames, molding, railings, etc.).
Reads profiles and blueprints.
Installs/replaces floor & ceramic tiles.
Hangs sheetrock. Tapes, floats, and texturizes sheetrock.
Installs formica on wood products.
Performs skilled carpentry work in construction and repair of walls, ceilings, etc.
Rebuilds/repairs wooden furniture and cabinetry.
Trains personnel on the job in the performance of tasks.
Provides leadership, work assignments, evaluation, and guidance to others.
Repair walls, ceilings, floors, siding, furniture, cabinets, doors, trim, etc.
Maintenance and repair of door hardware, including door closers, locksets, deadbolts, panic bars, door stops, hinges, thresholds, kick plates, and weather stripping.
Application of latex and oil base paints, varnish, sealers, on walls, ceilings and building exteriors.
Operate power tools: Drills, circular saws, routers, grinders, sanders, radial arm saws, table saws, pneumatic nail guns, etc.
Measure and layout using measuring tape, level, squares, string line, laser level, and transit.
