About The Position

Under general supervision, leads a crew that performs specialized maintenance, construction, and/or grounds keeping tasks in and around City parks grounds and recreational facilities. The purpose of this Parks Grounds Crew Leader position is to lead crews responsible for the day-to-day maintenance of assets and infrastructure owned by Austin Parks and Recreation. Requirements

Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
Knowledge of grounds keeping processes, policies, and procedures within the Parks and Recreation Department.
Knowledge of equipment and vehicles used in grounds services.
Knowledge of City practice, policy and procedures.
Knowledge of construction techniques.
Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
Skill in oral and written communication.
Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
Skill in planning and organizing.
Ability to operate power tools.
Ability to lift and carry equipment or materials to assigned work area.
Ability to read and follow floor plan sketches and diagrams.
Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities.
Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other City employees and the public.
Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus three (3) years of experience related to grounds keeping or general labor services, including at least one (1) year of crew experience.
Experience may substitute for education up to four (4) years.
If assigned to operate vehicles, must possess the appropriate Texas Driver's License for those vehicles.
Certification/License may be required by trade or specialization.
Ability to travel to more than one work location.
This position requires a Texas Class C Operator’s License or ability to obtain one by date of hire.
External New Hires must meet the City of Austin’s Driver Record Evaluation (DRE) requisite.
To be considered for a driving position, applicants cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty-six (36) months.
Tasks involve bending, lifting, walking, carrying or using a force equal to lifting up to thirty-five (35) pounds.
Must be physically and mentally able to communicate, respond and work with participant’s needs and safety issues; and tolerate loud noise associated with enthusiasm and excitement.
Ability to adapt to a variety of conditions such as daily walking, climbing, standing, balancing, kneeling, stooping, running, bending, crawling, stretching and reaching; and frequently walk and sit when leading various recreational activities.
Work outdoors in any and all types of weather and/or inclement conditions; and in confined spaces.
Work environment includes inside, and outside environmental conditions, extreme temperatures, and hazards associated with equipment operation including fumes, oils, gases, and mists.

Nice To Haves

Experience leading a crew responsible for performing janitorial and maintenance service in a park like setting.
Experience operating a truck and trailer.
Experience performing detailed pre-trip and post-trip inspections.
Experience utilizing appropriate PPE when performing site cleanup.
Experience assessing and reporting condition of park or work area for items such as cleanliness, damages, and/or safety issues.
Experience using iPads to create, complete, and close out Maximo work orders.

Assembles and dismantles portable stages and seating arrangements.
Drives and operates vehicles.
Assists supervisor with the development of work schedules and plans work activities.
Assists the public with questions/concerns.
May provide leadership, work assignments, evaluation, training, and guidance to others.
Fills in for supervisor in his or her absence.
