About The Position

The primary purpose of the Career Development Specialist is to provide career coaching to students and recent alumni, co-lead outreach initiatives and co-coordinate programming for these groups. This role involves a significant amount of direct student contact (approximately 70%) and the remainder dedicated to outreach and other responsibilities, though this ratio may shift based on office needs and goals.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in counseling, psychology, student personnel, higher education, human resources or related field.
  • Minimum of one year of professional career counseling/coaching or related experience, ideally in a college or university setting.

Nice To Haves

  • Two plus years of professional career counseling/coaching or related experience, ideally in a college or university setting.
  • Knowledge of Career Readiness concepts.

Responsibilities

  • Provide 1-1 career coaching and instruction to students and alumni on career and vocational planning, including major selection, resume assistance, job searching, interview preparation, and networking.
  • Prepare students for recruiting activities through workshops, orientation sessions, and emails.
  • Administer and interpret career inventories (e.g., MBTI, SII, Strengths) to students and alumni.
  • Guide students and alumni through the graduate and professional school application process, including application materials, entrance examinations, personal statements, and interviews.
  • Assist in training new practicum students by allowing shadowing, answering questions, and consulting on clients.
  • Hold drop-in hours for career-related questions.
  • Utilize Handshake for scheduling, managing case notes, and promoting events.
  • Maintain confidential student records and case notes.
  • Collaborate with academic departments to integrate Career Readiness Competencies across the curriculum.
  • Develop and share resources with faculty and staff for advising students on competencies.
  • Train faculty and staff on career readiness at Hamline.
  • Collaborate with staff on developing online modules (videos, worksheets) through Canvas.
  • Update and create major information binders, handouts, and website materials.
  • Assist in the implementation of Major Exploration Night.
  • Plan, coordinate, and instruct workshops on resumes, LinkedIn, and other topics.
  • Collaborate with Alumni Relations to plan the Etiquette Dinner, including working with experts, preparing student hosts, updating materials, and assisting with event setup and troubleshooting.
  • Assist with other CDC events, such as employer events/panels and class presentations, including identifying panelists and coordinating logistics.
  • Represent the CDC at events and programs, participating in panels, presentations, and orientations.
  • Attend and assist students at various job fairs (Education, Government and Nonprofit, MPCCC) and help with student preparation.
  • Assist in developing and implementing a Graduate School Panel.
  • Approve events and programs in Handshake.
  • Initiate tabling and presentations for CDC outreach needs.
  • Present on CDC services or career development topics to classes or student groups.
  • Build partnerships with faculty through presentations and resource sharing.
  • Develop and implement marketing plans and materials, including social media, to promote CDC services.
  • Market events through direct outreach to students and faculty, and collaborating departments.
  • Participate in Student Affairs and campus-wide committees as time permits.
  • Connect employers/alumni with students through campus programming to promote job, internship, networking, and mentoring opportunities.
  • Assume leadership roles within MCUCSA/MPCCC as appropriate.
  • Participate in Student Affairs professional development and diversity programming.
  • Comply with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and maintain confidential student information.
  • Perform other duties as requested.
