About The Position

Carnegie Mellon University's Silicon Valley campus is searching for a motivated Career Counselor. The Career Counselor will provide individualized career coaching to students, both in person and virtually, to support internship and full-time job searches. Coaching topics may include, but are not limited to, resume and cover letter development, job search strategy, target company identification, networking, interviewing, offer evaluation and negotiation, and career exploration.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 1-3 years career counseling / planning experience
  • Successful Background Check

Responsibilities

  • Develop career-related workshop materials and facilitate workshops and presentations for students on topics related to career development and employment preparation.
  • Cultivates potential and maintains existing relationships with employers through direct correspondence, membership in professional organizations, attendance at conferences, etc.
  • Writes and edits various career-related publications, including the vacancy newsletter, brochures, reports, articles, etc.
  • Responses to inquiries and other correspondence from students and alumni, employers and others.
  • Trouble shoots problems and questions concerning career/job issues and other university policies and procedures.
  • Answers all routine questions or corrects routine problems directly.
  • Refers difficult issues and questions to supervisor.
  • Provides career counseling to students and alumni through administration and interpretation of various vocational tests and inventories during individual counseling sessions.
  • Assists students in assessing their career goals, formulating job search strategies, developing resumes and practicing interviewing skills, etc.
  • Provides resume referral services job placement.
  • Creates, organizes and presents career-related programs, workshops, job fairs, graduate school fairs/events, etc.
  • Acts as liaison between Career Center and other university offices, including Student Employment, Dean of Student Affairs, Academic departments, etc.
