About The Position

The Experiential Learning Hub at the University of Guelph supports student success and employability through career education, co-operative education, and work-integrated learning. The Career Education Team within this department fosters career agency and readiness through one-on-one and group support, and builds partnerships to enhance student learning and career development. The Career Advisor, reporting to the Manager, Career Education, will advise and support partners, specializing within the Ontario Veterinary College and adjacent programs. This role will assist students with career exploration, further education planning, decision-making, and job searching, and requires experience in student-facing support, group facilitation, employer outreach, and collaborative programming.

Requirements

Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Minimum three (3) years of related experience in career development, student services, advising, or a closely related field.
Experience working with diverse student populations and partners in a complex, fast-paced environment.
Ability to coach, advise, and support individuals using a client-centred approach to achieve career, professional, and educational goals.
Skilled in building and maintaining effective, collaborative relationships with students, faculty, staff, employers, community partners, and other entities.
Sound judgment, diplomacy, tact, and discretion when managing sensitive or complex situations.
Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, accessibility, and belonging, with experience supporting individuals from diverse backgrounds and identities.
Strong organizational and administrative skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities, adapt to changing demands, maintain attention to detail, and meet competing deadlines.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including experience delivering presentations, workshops, and group facilitation sessions.
Strong technical proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Teams, PowerPoint, etc.) and the ability to learn and utilize new technologies and systems.

Nice To Haves

Certificate from a recognized post-graduate Career Development program would be considered an asset.
Knowledge of labour market trends, recruitment practices, and career pathways within veterinary medicine and related sectors is strongly preferred.
Demonstrated understanding of the career development and educational planning needs of students enrolled in, or aspiring to enter, professional degree programs would be considered an asset.

Responsibilities

Advising students on career planning and development, including career exploration, further education pathways, academic program fit, job search strategies, workplace expectations, and the evolving nature of work.
Providing individual and group career support through appointments, workshops, classroom presentations, and other student-facing programming initiatives.
Developing and maintaining career education resources and supports in a variety of formats, including in-person, virtual, and on-demand delivery methods.
Connecting students with experiential learning opportunities by developing strategies and resources that promote engagement with opportunities both within and outside the university.
Collaborating with academic and service departments across campus to integrate career development principles into programs, services, and student engagement initiatives.
Utilizing tools such as the Professional and Career Development Record (PCDR) to enhance student goal setting, career exploration, and job search abilities.
Designing, facilitating, and delivering workshops, presentations, and classroom sessions for audiences ranging from small groups to large-scale events.
Working collaboratively with faculty, staff, and campus partners to develop student-facing career programming, resources, and initiatives.
Building and maintaining relationships with industry, employer, and community partners to increase awareness of part-time, summer, internship, and new graduate employment opportunities.
Engaging external partners to support student career exploration, workforce readiness, and the development of foundational employability competencies.
Promoting connections between students and prospective employers through networking, employer engagement, and career-related programming activities.
Conducting co-op work term site visits and student check-ins to review learning outcomes and support intentional learning objectives aligned with academic program requirements.
Assessing student work-integrated learning experiences and documenting progress toward established co-op and experiential learning outcomes.
Identifying concerns or opportunities arising from work-term experiences and collaborating with relevant partners to support student success and employer engagement.
