The Career Advisor is responsible for delivering first-rate career services for Cockrell School of Engineering students and alumni to aid them in making informed career decisions, gaining practical experience and transferable skills, preparing for an effective job search, and finding suitable accommodation post-graduation. This position also focuses on leading multiple career service or administrative programs such as career fairs, first destination reports, externship, classroom outreach, first year interest groups, and more.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and three years of experience coordinating student programs, recruiting, student advising/mentoring, and/or other related responsibilities
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and support students and their families.
  • High energy, team player with strong verbal and written communication skills and organizational skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to communicate with all levels of constituents; students, parents, faculty and other staff members.
  • Demonstrated professional demeanor.
  • Proven ability to take ownership of programs and innovate new ideas for continuous improvement
  • Able to work independently and in teams with overlapping projects.
  • Solid proficiency with standard applications in Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and Google Suite
  • Quick learner of online and technology tools such as online databases, platforms, and applications
  • Familiarity with video and web conferencing software such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

  • Appreciation for and knowledge of engineering/STEM education and knowledge of The University of Texas at Austin and the Cockrell School of Engineering.

  • Experience coordinating program with academic or experiential components.
  • Experience in career services.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct individual advising sessions to help students/alumni make informed career decisions and to aid in preparation of job application materials.
  • Provide expert guidance on year-by-year career planning and direct students/alumni to relevant career tools and campus resources.
  • Coordinate and track outcomes for program areas, such as, but not limited to: career workshops, externship, social media, office newsletter, campus outreach, etc.
  • Deliver professional development presentations to general and targeted student populations.
  • Assist with logistical and administrative details for career fairs, office-related events, and departmental events.
  • Produce marketing, promotional materials, and social media content for owned programs.
  • Facilitate a cohort for the First Year Interest Group program in collaboration with a student mentor.
  • Other functions as assigned.
