About The Position

The Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Respiratory Therapist focuses on helping individuals recover and manage chronic respiratory and cardiac conditions. They work directly with individuals to restore or improve physical endurance and abilities, promote behavioral changes, adapt surroundings, and/or teach new skills, to achieve optimal physical functioning in daily life tasks. The Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Respiratory Therapist provides evaluation and treatment to patients in the outpatient setting. The Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Therapist oversees services provided by Exercise Specialists and aides. They are required to work as part of a multi-disciplinary care team. They may assist in quality improvement and new programming initiative development.

Requirements

  • 2 Year/Associate Degree in Respiratory Therapy
  • 3 years working in a hospital or clinical setting with commitment to ongoing professional development and education
  • NYS License as a Respiratory Therapist License
  • BLS Certification within 6 months from date of hire
  • ACLS Certification within 6 months from date of hire
  • CRT or RRT NBRC Credential

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience in cardiac or pulmonary rehab, ICU/SCU setting

Responsibilities

  • Maintains licensure by obtaining required CEUs as determined by NYS Practice Act
  • Adheres to professional standards, policies and procedures, federal, state and local requirements and Joint Commission (TJC) standards.
  • Performs a comprehensive physical, psychosocial, and safety assessment as evidenced by clinical documentation of both pulmonary and cardiac function. Identifies those functional problems that require cardiopulmonary rehab intervention based on an accurate assessment of the patients status.
  • Must be capable of understanding and carrying out prescribed therapy services as requested by physicians and/or midlevel providers.
  • Develops & implements an individualized treatment plan of care to promote optimum endurance, function and safety, as documented in the clinical record.
  • Monitors patient progress and adjust treatment plans as necessary
  • Leads supervised exercise (strength, endurance), teaches breathing exercises, manages oxygen therapy
  • Monitors appropriate vitals: heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels, perceived exertion & breathlessness during sessions.
  • Completes all required paperwork documentation following treatment and procedures to and ensures that documentation reflects care provided and outcomes achieved.
  • Demonstrates the ability to evaluate and treat the assigned number of patients per day, and determine the need for follow up visits to maximize the functional outcomes
  • Maintains current knowledge and awareness of insurance regulations related to provision of therapy services
  • Acts fiscally responsible in use & request of supplies, and in submitting patient charges in a timely manner.
  • Excellent motor, hand, eye coordination and manual dexterity required
  • Ability to handle and operate therapy equipment, including but not limited to: safe patient handling equipment, and exercise machines
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including but not limited to, Excel, Word, and Power Point, is preferred.
  • Coordinates patient care with other clinical team members ensuring optimal patient care and communication
  • Maintains and enhances personal and professional knowledge, as well as promotes professional standards
  • Acts as a preceptor/trainer for staff
  • Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a team inter and intra departmentally to facilitate the department’s ability to meet its goals and objectives.
