About The Position

This part-time position in Cardiovascular Diagnostics at Advocate Christ Medical Center involves performing EKG procedures across various hospital areas, including inpatient floors, the Emergency Department (ED), Outpatient (OP) clinics, and Intake. The role also includes applying and setting up Holter and event monitors, and conducting pacemaker and cardiac device checks. The technician is responsible for ensuring accurate results from various electrocardiogram types for cardiologist interpretation, identifying and reporting severe abnormalities, and promoting patient safety. Non-clinical duties include maintaining patient files and department logs, performing computer functions for the EKG management system, maintaining equipment, processing reports, performing HIS functions, and documenting Performance Improvement monitors.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma and 6 months to 1 year previous EKG/ healthcare experience or completion of an EKG certificate program with a clinical internship
  • Good oral and written Communications skills
  • Ability to perform blood Pressure readings and Identify cardiac arrhythmias
  • Certified by NCCT as a NCET, or an Equivalent certification within 1 year of employment.
  • CPR/BLS certified
  • CPR and BLS Certified within 6 months of employment.
  • Certification not required if the associate has completed a Bachelor or Master's degree in Exercise science/exercise Physiology with course work in EKG.
  • Ability to lift and or move patients.
  • Ability to work under Stressful conditions and in difficult situations.
  • Ability to stoop, bend and stand for extended periods of time.
  • May be exposed to hazardous materials and life threatening diseases.
  • Must be able to rotate to other shifts if needed.
  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience with various age groups is preferred.
  • Recognize the needs and behaviors of age groups of patients treated (i.e. understanding child growth and development, normal Patterns of adolescent behavior and look for signs of normal aging).

Responsibilities

  • Perform EKG procedures across various hospital areas, including inpatient floors, the Emergency Department (ED), Outpatient (OP) clinics, and Intake.
  • Apply and set up Holter and event monitors as needed.
  • Conduct pacemaker and cardiac device checks as required.
  • Ensure that accurate results from 12 lead computerized electrocardiograms, single channel electrocardiograms and signal average electrocardiograms are provided for cardiologists’ interpretation.
  • Administer 12 lead-computerized electrocardiograms to uncovered areas as needed.
  • Identify and report severe electrocardiographic abnormalities.
  • Promote patient safety by reporting of issues through established channels and participating as requested in safety initiatives.
  • Perform technical patient preparation on inpatients and outpatients for 24-hour Holter monitoring and event monitors when needed.
  • Provide patients with adequate instructions on the use of arrhythmia monitors to ensure optimal results.
  • Maintain accurate and up to date patient files and department logs.
  • Perform routine computer functions for EKG management system (including daily, monthly and quarterly backup of all EKG patient files).
  • Maintain proper functioning of equipment (Routine maintenance) troubleshoot when appropriate.
  • Notify the appropriate party when equipment malfunctions.
  • Maintain work area in a clean, orderly and safe manner.
  • Process completed reports in accordance with established departmental procedures.
  • Perform routine HIS functions (i.e. ordering, charging, crediting etc…)
  • Maintain updated, accurate documentation of Performance Improvement monitors inclusive of department procedure logs, physician interpretation logs, equipment repair logs, radiation badges and pharmacy inventories.
