About The Position

The Division of Cardiac Surgery at Royal Columbian Hospital is seeking a permanent full-time Cardiac Surgeon to join their group of seven surgeons. The ideal candidate will possess 1-2 additional years of clinical fellowship training post-residency in specialized areas such as aortic surgery, transcatheter valve therapy, minimally invasive valve surgery, heart failure, complex heart rhythm devices, or critical care. Royal Columbian Hospital is a comprehensive adult non-transplant cardiac surgery center serving nearly 2 million people. The service performs over 950 open-heart procedures annually, including coronary artery bypass grafting, valve repair and replacement, complex aortic surgery, TEVAR, and Ross procedures. Additionally, they perform cardiac electrical device implants (tachy, brady, biventricular) and are equal partners in TAVR, TEER, and TMVR programs. Some members are involved in the extracorporeal life support program and critical care medicine. The hospital is a major teaching site for the University of British Columbia's cardiac surgery residency and undergraduate medical education programs. A significant redevelopment project, valued at $1.3 billion, will enhance cardiac surgery infrastructure and operating capacity by at least 50%, with an expected opening in September 2026.

Requirements

  • Certified in cardiac surgery by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
  • Eligible for licensure with College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC (CPSBC).
  • Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) - Mandatory

Nice To Haves

  • 1 or 2 additional years of clinical fellowship training following residency in areas such as aortic surgery, transcatheter valve therapy, minimally invasive valve surgery, heart failure, complex heart rhythm devices or critical care.

Responsibilities

  • Perform over 950 open heart procedures annually, including coronary artery bypass grafting, valve repair and replacement, complex aortic surgery, TEVAR and Ross procedures.
