About The Position

The Cardiac / Unit Secretary reports to the Clinical Nurse Manager and functions as a Receptionist, performing a variety of clerical support and other duties to assist the nursing staff in carrying out daily patient care activities. This role is responsible for monitoring cardiac monitoring systems, preparing and maintaining patient medical records, and transcribing and expediting physician orders. Requirements

  • Minimum of a High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Will be required to pass the ECHN arrhythmia course or challenge exam during the new employee introductory orientation period.
  • Previous knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Able to read and communicate effectively using the English language.
  • Basic windows based software program computer familiarity is required utilizing primarily Meditech for entering orders.

Responsibilities

  • Meets, greets and directs all patients, families, visitors and health care team members, providing accurate and appropriate information.
  • Prepares medical records for new admissions and discharged patients, and maintains accurate medical records during patient stay.
  • Transcribes physician orders in a timely manner, enters orders in the computer system, prioritizes orders by identifying those with timed or immediate action, and notifies appropriate nursing staff or department.
  • Responds appropriately and timely to patient requests, including prompt acknowledgement to patient call bell.
  • Demonstrates an ability to float to different patient care units and function effectively in different situations.
  • Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, to promote efficient functioning of the unit.
  • Answers telephone/intercom in a polite manner and communicates information to the appropriate personnel/family.
  • Orders supplies, processes work orders, enters charges and performs other coordinating activities to maintain unit operations.
  • Demonstrates competency in interpreting dysrhythmias.
  • Runs and posts rhythm strips at the specified times.
  • Communicates information about dysrhythmias to the appropriate nurse in a timely fashion.
  • Maintains logs pertaining to telemetry.
  • Monitoring cardiac monitoring systems.
