The Cardiac Nurse Practitioner (NP) functions within the policies of the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System (VAGLAHS), where assigned, and holds professional and legal responsibility to the patient. The duties and responsibilities of the Cardiac NP include executing position responsibilities independently and collaboratively in accordance with the scope and Standards of Advanced Nursing Practice within the specialty area. This role involves the evaluation and management of pacemakers, implanted cardioverter-defibrillators, and cardiac implanted electronic devices, as well as the management of patients with heart failure and monitoring of Exercise Tolerance Tests. The NP will provide care decisions and management for new and follow-up patients presenting with cardiac diagnoses, working in an independent and interdependent relationship with medical staff. Key responsibilities include identifying and addressing disease prevention and health promotion issues, demonstrating advanced assessment and decision-making skills, and maintaining accurate, confidential medical records using the Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS). The NP will follow clinical guidelines, complete health histories, and be responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of acute, chronic, and long-term healthcare issues. They will order and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe or recommend pharmacological agents and durable medical equipment, and set priorities for organized and timely patient care. The role also includes case presentations, participation in performance evaluations and professional development, and evaluating own performance to improve practice. Maintaining mandatory requirements and competency standards, treating staff, patients, and families with respect, and using clinical research techniques in decision-making are also essential. The NP will identify and document appropriate ICD and CPT coding, educate patients and families about preventive care and treatments, and comply with performance measures and safety guidelines.
