About The Position

The Cardiac Monitor Technician monitors and identifies basic normal cardiac rhythms, dysrhythmias, and life threatening arrhythmias under general supervision and in accordance with established policies, procedures, and professional guidelines. The Cardiac Monitor Technician accurately documents and labels cardiac rhythms and promptly reports findings to appropriate clinical personnel in accordance with organizational standards. All duties are performed in alignment with the mission, vision, and values of Tampa General Hospital.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Certified EKG Technician (NHA, AMCA, or NPS) OR successful completion of EKG certification program or previous experience as a Monitor Technician in an acute care hospital and successful completion of a competency assessment required.
• Knowledge of cardiac monitoring principles and telemetry systems.
• Ability to recognize life‑threatening arrhythmias and initiate appropriate escalation procedures.
• Skill in operating cardiac monitoring equipment and related computer systems.
• Ability to document rhythm interpretations accurately and timely using standardized or electronic systems.
• Ability to follow clinical protocols, escalation pathways, and unit‑specific procedures consistently.
• Ability to communicate calmly and professionally with healthcare team members in urgent situations.
• Knowledge of patient safety principles related to cardiac monitoring and alarm management.

Responsibilities

• Continuously monitor cardiac telemetry for assigned patients.
• Accurately interpret cardiac rhythms and identify abnormal or life‑threatening patterns.
• Immediately notify nursing staff of rhythm changes or critical findings per established protocols.
• Document rhythm interpretations and monitoring activities in accordance with hospital policy.
• Maintain proper function and troubleshooting awareness of monitoring equipment.
• Collaborate with nursing and interdisciplinary team members to support patient safety and timely intervention.
• Adhere to all patient confidentiality, safety, and regulatory requirements.
• Perform additional responsibilities as assigned in support of clinical operations.
