The Cardiac Device Specialist evaluates, manages, and provides support in the delivery of quality clinical care for patients with cardiac pacemakers and automatic internal cardiac defibrillator systems. This role requires a strong understanding of devices, their effects, and the utilization of critical thinking skills. The specialist is proficient in healthcare procedures and the functioning of electrical medical devices. Key responsibilities include daily review of remote device transmissions, correlating this data with the patient's clinical condition for arrhythmia management, performing interrogations and reprogramming of devices in an office setting, interpreting arrhythmias, troubleshooting, and reprogramming pacemaker/defibrillator settings according to patient needs and department protocols. The specialist also contacts patients regarding recalls, provides patient education on pacing, and performs transtelephonic checks. Indirect patient care involves maintaining programmers, ensuring data entry, reporting abnormal findings, scheduling checks, and triaging messages. Effective communication with internal and external customers, acting as a liaison between patients, staff, physicians, and external customers, and collaborating with other healthcare professionals are essential. Accurate documentation in the EMR, completing charges, vouchers, referrals, and requisitions are also key duties. Time management and resource management skills are necessary to complete daily activities and maintain adequate inventory. Flexibility to perform additional duties is also required.
