About The Position

Responsible for the performance of phlebotomy procedures and non-technical duties in the laboratory, outpatient area and off-site services. This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Caregivers may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.

Requirements

  • Must pass certification exam within 1 year of hire date when eligible
  • Demonstrates ability to use a keyboard as may be required to perform the essential duties of the job.

Nice To Haves

  • ASCP or equivalent certification.
  • One year of full time phlebotomy experience.
  • Equivalent of four years of high school education.

Responsibilities

  • Performs phlebotomy procedures (veinipuncture, finger sticks, heel sticks, bleeding times) as appropriate for the patient (from age 0 to > 100 years) requiring this procedure.
  • Identifies patients and properly labels specimen tubes.
  • Determines priority of STAT draws. Ensures timely transport of all patient specimens to lab for testing.
  • Utilizes computers as appropriate in completing assigned functions.
  • Organizes assigned work and accurately completes workload statistics.
  • Helps co-workers when needed and communicates with laboratory departments when needed to ensure an orderly workflow.
  • Will act as a receptionist; greet patients, answer phones, files laboratory results, orders and reports, and process reference laboratory reports when not performing phlebotomy procedures.
  • Will act as a lab aid and set up Microbiology cultures and process specimens to promote constant workflow.
  • Readily accepts changes in assignment. Performs work level of equal skill and responsibility as needed. May also perform work of a higher level in preparation for increased responsibility and may be required to do work of lesser responsibility when the workload of the department se requires.
  • Under supervision will help in the training of new employees, MTL students and student interns at the hospital in the performance of phlebotomy duties.
  • Follows all organizational and department policies and procedures.
  • Attends all required Safety training programs and can describe his/ her responsibilities related to general safety, department safety, and specific job-related hazards.
  • Complies with established Laboratory and Hospital policies for Universal Precautions and Safety procedures. When handling blood and /or body fluids, Universal Precaution procedures will be followed in order to minimize exposure to infectious diseases. Safety policies and procedures will be followed when using chemicals.
  • Maintains work area, cleans bench, restocks supplies and notifies manager of low stock.
  • Completes annual required courses on time.
  • Performs DOT and non DOT urine collections when requested following the established guidelines.
  • Performs laboratory QA and checks orders for accuracy (tests, providers, copies) as time allows
  • Seeks additional assignments/projects during periods of lower than normal work volume.
