About The Position

The Captain assists the Sheriff and the Chief Deputy Sheriff in the overall operations of Patrol and Investigations. The Captain is responsible for providing direction, focus, mentoring, and accountability to sergeants, deputies, investigators, and water patrol staff. Coordinates, and maintains the schedule for staff. The Captain must be able to fill in for patrol staff and perform Deputy Sheriff duties, and responds to major calls, handles citizen complaints and internal personnel issues.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in criminology, sociology, psychology, or a related field
  • Successful completion of a law enforcement skills field training program at an accredited school
  • Six or more years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience
  • Four years supervisory experience at time of appointment
  • Licensed and must maintain a license as a Peace Officer in the State of Minnesota
  • Valid Driver’s license upon hire
  • Must successfully pass a fingerprint based criminal history check and maintain annual certification through the BCA

Nice To Haves

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Criminology, Sociology, Psychology or a related field is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Assists the Sheriff and Chief Deputy Sheriff in matters relative to the administration of the Sheriff’s Office and keeps them informed of all current developments.
  • Assists with the direction of day-to-day operations of the Office, including the work direction and supervision of all assigned members.
  • Coordinates the recruitment, training, maintenance, and allocation of all volunteers.
  • Oversees Water Patrol activities.
  • Coordinates and supervises the training, assignment, and development of subordinate officers.
  • Coordinates activities with supervisors or other departments, exchanges information with officers in other law enforcement agencies, obtains advice from the County Attorney, Court Administrator, and Municipal Prosecutor’s Office regarding cases, policies, and procedures.
  • If assigned, oversees the overall management of the investigation's unit and evidence room.
  • If assigned, oversees the overall management of the patrol unit.
  • If assigned, oversee the overall management of the courthouse unit.
  • Coordinate, train, and manage the mobile field force unit.
  • Performs other duties and special projects as assigned.
