About The Position

Capital Transit is seeking a qualified person to fill our Long-Term Temporary Mechanic II position. This is a journey-level mechanic position that independently performs both routine and complex maintenance and repairs. This position requires advanced technical knowledge and skills to perform corrective and preventative maintenance on all Capital Transit vehicles and equipment. Types of Transit equipment include diesel and electric buses, paratransit vans, service support vehicles, and snow removal equipment. Particular attention will be given to a systematic and timely approach to performing quality repairs and maintenance. The Mechanic will work closely with the Supervisor to assist in system analysis and policy implementation.

Requirements

  • Three (3) years of experience in automotive, construction/heavy equipment, truck, or transit bus repair and maintenance.
  • Previous experience with diesel and internal combustion engine repair.
  • Ability to read electrical wiring diagrams.
  • Ability to read mechanical repair schematics.
  • Ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
  • Must provide and maintain own set of hand tools.
  • Valid Class “B” Alaska Commercial Driver’s License with Passenger Endorsement and valid for vehicles equipped with air brakes within nine (9) months of employment and for continued employment.
  • Must provide and maintain own set of hand tools.
  • Must provide signed written releases requesting USDOT drug and alcohol records from all previous, USDOT-covered employers that the applicant has worked for within the last two years.
  • Must have tested positive or refused to test on pre-employment test for any USDOT covered employer within the last two years.
  • Must register with the FMCSA Clearinghouse and provide CBJ with paper and electronic consent for a full query of the driver’s Clearinghouse record.

Nice To Haves

  • Post-secondary education or technical training in automotive work may be substituted for the required experience on the basis of 125 clock hours of instruction for one month of experience up to a maximum of twenty-four months.

Responsibilities

  • Performs both routine and complex maintenance and repairs on Capital Transit vehicles and equipment.
  • Performs corrective and preventative maintenance on diesel and electric buses, paratransit vans, service support vehicles, and snow removal equipment.
  • Works closely with the Supervisor to assist in system analysis and policy implementation.
  • Makes independent decisions following established methods and procedures.
  • Stays on task to meet constantly changing deadlines and priorities.
  • Occasionally works shifts, holidays, weekends, scheduled and emergency overtime.
  • Attends local and out of area training courses as authorized and required.
  • Maintains minimum unscheduled absences and a high rate of attendance.
  • Maintains a positive attitude and is flexible to change.
