About The Position

The Capital Projects Controller is responsible for financial management, reporting, and control of the Company’s capital expenditure (CAPEX) portfolio. The role partners with Project Managers, Engineers, Procurement, Finance, and operational stakeholders to develop project budgets, monitor expenditures, analyze plan-versus-actual performance, forecast project costs, and support accurate accounting and reporting throughout the project lifecycle. The Controller provides financial insights and recommendations to support decision-making, budget compliance, and achievement of project objectives safely, efficiently, and in accordance with company policies and procedures.

The position also supports a strong safety culture by leading by example, complying with Company safety policies and standards, and incorporating safety considerations into project planning, budgeting, forecasting, and execution.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in project management, business, or an engineering field.
• Five years of relevant work experience in the construction, energy, utility, or engineering field.
• Experience with budgeting, cost management, planning, estimating, scheduling, and other project-controls functions across engineering, procurement, and construction for large capital construction projects.
• Expertise in financial analysis, schedule analysis, modeling, and budgeting methodologies.
• Demonstrated success working in a fast-paced, project-centric environment.
• Understanding of project management and business processes and systems.
• Ability to collaborate with people in varied roles and with different leadership styles.
• Strong organizational, critical-thinking, and analytical skills.
• Ability to facilitate meetings, including preparing agendas, presentations, minutes, action items, and other meeting documentation.
• Knowledge of industrial plant production processes.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Ability to understand and interpret schedules using Microsoft Project, Primavera, or similar tools.

Responsibilities

• Support a strong safety culture by leading by example and ensuring compliance with Company safety policies, procedures, standards, and Life Saving Golden Rules.
• Incorporate safety considerations into project planning, budgeting, forecasting, and execution activities.
• Serve as the primary financial point of contact for capital projects and CAPEX-related activities.
• Develop, maintain, and monitor capital project budgets, forecasts, cash flow projections, cost estimates, and financial plans throughout the project lifecycle.
• Perform capital-project accounting activities, including project setup, cost tracking, accruals, capitalization, asset transfers, and project closeout.
• Prepare and distribute monthly, quarterly, and annual CAPEX reports, dashboards, and performance metrics.
• Analyze plan-versus-actual expenditures, commitments, forecasts, and project performance; identify variances and recommend corrective actions.
• Coordinate with Project Managers, Engineering, Procurement, Operations, and Finance to keep project costs, schedules, forecasts, and financial assumptions accurate and current.
• Monitor project expenditures and commitments to maintain approved budgets and effective financial controls.
• Identify financial risks, cost overruns, budget impacts, and opportunities for cost optimization and improved project performance.
• Support annual capital budgets, long-range forecasts, and strategic capital planning initiatives.
• Maintain CAPEX project data in SAP and other financial systems, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance with internal controls and accounting requirements.
• Prepare financial analyses, business cases, trend reports, and key performance indicators to support management decision-making.
• Participate in project review meetings and provide financial updates on budget status, forecasting, commitments, and project performance.
• Ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards, company policies, authorization requirements, and internal control procedures.
• Support internal and external audits by providing accurate capital-project financial information, documentation, and analysis.
• Maintain complete and organized project financial records and documentation throughout the project lifecycle.
• Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
