About The Position

The Analyst II, Capital Planning will prepare and analyze Capital Expenditure Requests (CERs) to ensure Macy’s, Inc. is making financially sound investments. The Analyst will also support the Senior in tracking of capital investments. This position will work with the Senior to provide an independent and objective assessment of the actual financial performance of capital projects versus the expected performance assumed in the original financial pro formas. The Analyst will support the Senior in regularly reporting findings to the Chief Financial Officer and other Corporate Strategy Group members and is responsible for preparing the annual summary of capital project tracking for the Macy’s, Inc. Board of Directors. This position requires extensive coordination with all management levels across numerous departments, including Store Environment, Real Estate, Area Research, Stores, Merchants, Tax, and Capital Control. The Analyst will also perform other financial analyses and duties as assigned. This position can be based in either Cincinnati or New York City.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of capital approval processes, including project tracking, documentation, and stage-gate readiness.
  • Ability to build and interpret discounted cash flow models (NPV, IRR, Payback), develop assumptions, and perform sensitivity/scenario analysis with unique, non-standard project structures.
  • Experience consolidating forecasts, validating inputs, and explaining variances to support enterprise-wide capital investment tracking.
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel and the ability to streamline and automate recurring reporting (e.g., Power Query/Power Pivot, complex formulas, pivot tables; VBA a plus).
  • Ability to distill complex analyses into clear, concise updates and Board-ready materials; strong PowerPoint proficiency required.
  • Proven ability to partner with Store Environment, Real Estate, Area Research, Stores, Merchandising, Tax, and Capital Control to coordinate and validate submissions.
  • Strong analytical/problem-solving skills, above-average math aptitude (rates, ratios, percentages), and familiarity with basic statistical concepts.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and work independently while exercising sound judgment and attention to detail.
  • Candidates with a bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in a related field are encouraged to apply.
  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience preferred.
  • Regularly required to sit, talk, hear; use hands/fingers to touch, handle, and feel. Occasionally required to move about the workplace and reach with hands and arms. Requires close vision.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule based on department and company needs.
  • Comfortable working in a dynamic environment with evolving priorities.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare CERs and Senior Management memos.
  • Build and adapt financial models that vary significantly by project; this role involves highly ad-hoc analysis.
  • Develop strong relationships with key partners to ensure timely and accurate input for CERs.
  • Provides regular updates describing actual vs. expected performance for capital projects using financial analyses and statistical modeling. Capital projects include new stores, major store remodels, merchandising initiatives, digital investments, and strategic initiatives.
  • Develop and summarize annual capital tracking report for the broader Macy’s Finance Team.
  • Collaborate with Store Environment, Area Research, Real Estate, Capital Control, Merchandising, Supply Chain, Tax Digital and Stores leadership to effectively evaluate baseline assumptions, costs and economic factors impacting success or failure of a capital investment.
  • Manage and update global assumptions made within CERs to ensure consistency and accuracy.
  • Provide recommendations to guide future capital investment decisions.
  • Provide financial modeling support and evaluate investment opportunities.
  • Maintain various reports and complete ad hoc projects as assigned.
