About The Position

The Canine Reproduction Technician schedules all necessary procedures for breeding colony and breeder evaluates. This position performs all technical procedures associated with breeding. Help maintain cryopreservation program. Assists with maintaining records in multiple databases for dogs in all programs. Ensures comfort and wellbeing for each dog during medical and husbandry procedures by utilizing positive reinforcement and low stress handling techniques. Assists with all assessments of Breeder Evaluates.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to provide canine healthcare and conduct breedings under the supervision of a veterinarian.
  • Education and/or experience as a Veterinary Technician preferred.
  • Ability to read and understand dog body language, experience in applying low stress handling techniques and behavior modification plans utilizing positive reinforcement preferred.
  • Behavior Checklist (BCL) scorer certified and Fear Free Certification, or ability to obtain within 1 year of employment.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and organizational skills required.
  • Computer literacy needed.
  • 4-year degree in Animal Science, Biology or related field OR veterinary technical degree OR at least 2-3 years of experience in animal breeding field or animal husbandry.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before members of the public, volunteers, and other employees.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.
  • Ability to perform calculations in standard measures of American currency and weight, volume and distance.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram/chart, or schedule form.
  • Ability to use all aspects of Microsoft Office including Outlook, Excel, and Word as well as accessing e-mail and using Internet Explorer as a research tool

Responsibilities

  • Executes day-to-day procedures (reproductive, medical, and misc.) on breeding colony with input from Genetics and Reproduction Manager.
  • Communicates with Volunteer Programs when breeders are needed on campus.
  • Informs Genetics and Reproduction Manager of any pertinent health information about breeding colony as discovered.
  • Arranges and oversees breedings, including natural breeding and artificial insemination.
  • Ensures canine safety and comfort during this process.
  • Tracks canine ovulation by performing progesterone level and vaginal cytology.
  • Performs semen collections, evaluations, shipping, and cryopreservation.
  • Manages sperm cryopreservation including sample prep, freezing, and inventory analysis.
  • Actively participates in formal behavioral assessments of Breeder Evaluates using general observation and the Behavioral Checklist (BCL) in a variety of scenarios.
  • Conducts routine genetic testing on Breeder Evaluates and enters results into databases.
  • Ensures proper sanitation, sterilization, calibration, and maintenance of all equipment and machines.
  • Maintains inventory and orders supplies as needed.
  • Substantial data entry (including but not limited to information about health, reproduction, temperament, and pedigree) for dogs in all programs.
  • Maintains list of due health services- weight checks, eye exams, cardiac screenings, vaccines, physical exams, semen evaluations, etc- for active breeders.
  • Coordinates fulfillment of these needs with Volunteer Programs and Medical Services.
  • Performs pregnancy confirmations by transabdominal ultrasound.
  • Assists with any paperwork needed for breeding colony.
  • Assists with coordination of dogs coming to and from campus from other schools as needed.
  • Transports dogs on an as-needed basis.
  • Uses educational opportunities available to develop proficiency in the areas listed on this job description and shows ability to move beyond basic knowledge.
  • Willingness to come in on weekends, after hours, and/or holidays to perform breeding procedures as directed by Genetics and Reproduction Manager or Director.
  • Willingness to assume additional responsibilities as directed by upper management.
