About The Position

The Campus Safety Department has a position for a qualified Safety Officer on the 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. shift. This position will provide for the safety of students, faculty, staff, visitors, and property through enforcement of university and department policies and procedures. This officer reports to the shift supervisor. This position is designated as an essential employee and may be required to report to work as scheduled when University offices are closed due to severe weather or other conditions.

Requirements

  • Strong interpersonal skills to build working partnerships with faculty, staff, and students as well as external parties including neighbors/local residents, city officials, municipal/county/state police agencies, local health services, first responders, and members of the media.
  • Ability to de-escalate conflict situations and a demeanor that is perceived as professional yet calm and relaxed.
  • A high level of professional ethics and personal integrity
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must qualify for Florida Department of State Class "D" and "G" licenses.
  • Must be able to exert appropriate strength when necessary.
  • Ability to climb stairs to the top of a nine story building; make judgment calls while under pressure/duress; carry and use, if necessary, a firearm while under pressure/duress appropriately.
  • Apprehend and detain, if necessary, suspected law violators which may include physical exertion.
  • Excellent clear and concise communication skills required.
  • Must have a valid Florida driver's license.
  • Must successfully pass a personal background, criminal records, psychological, and physical check.
  • Must be a US citizen or a Permanent Legal Resident Alien.

Nice To Haves

  • Law enforcement/retired military police experience preferred.
  • Experience in using various Safety Department equipment (two-way radio, cameras, computers, etc).
  • Experience in a college or university preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Patrol the campus perimeter, buildings and grounds to provide visible deterrent to crime.
  • Maintain building and room security.
  • Respond to crimes and other incidents committed on campus, report on same.
  • Respond to fire, burglary, hold up alarms, and disturbance calls.
  • Control vehicle/pedestrian traffic and enforcing parking regulations on campus.
  • Unlock/lock buildings and rooms when facilities personnel are not available.
  • Respond to requests for information and assistance in a manner that positively represent The University of Tampa.
