About The Position

This position is accountable for the safety and security of campus as well as armed patrol operations and performing investigative duties. This posting is for an as-needed position with no regularly scheduled hours. The candidate should be able to fill in primarily 12-hour overnight shifts.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree (A.A) from a two-year college or technical school; one to three years experience (in the field of criminal justice); or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Crisis intervention skills are necessary.
  • Training and experience with firearms is necessary.
  • Situational awareness that includes ability to observe suspicious behavior and potential safety threats and environmental hazards.
  • Operate surveillance systems, access control software, incident reporting tools, and body-worn cameras.
  • Ability to work twelve-hour shifts including weekends and holidays.
  • Must be available on the days assigned.
  • Demonstrated awareness and commitment to effectively establishing relationships and positive communication across multiple dimensions of diversity including, but not limited to, race, gender, physical limitations, class, or religious perspectives.

Nice To Haves

  • Training and experience in police and/or security work preferred.
  • Training in basic first aid and emergency medical procedures preferred.
  • Training and experience using defensive tactics is preferred.
  • Understanding of incident command and emergency management.
  • Certification as an Emergency Medical Technician in the State of Michigan preferred.
  • Possess a valid Michigan Concealed Pistols license with an exemption from pistol free zones (classrooms, residence halls, churches or entertainment facility seating more than 2500 people)

Responsibilities

  • Perform patrol duties by patrolling the campus on foot or car; and performing safety and security checks to ensure safety and security of staff, students and buildings.
  • Enforce policies and regulations of the University.
  • Establish and maintain the investigation process by responding to incidents, generating reports, distributing report information to appropriate persons, visiting incident scenes, gathering all pertinent data, and keeping track of campus events to ensure timely and effective investigations.
  • Provide security for special events by conducting parking details and providing building security to ensure necessary safety of outside performers.
  • Assist in maintaining the University’s compliance with campus regulations such as Clery and Annual Fire Safety.
  • Cooperate with local police departments and safety teams of nearby institutions in promoting a safe environment on and around the campus area.
  • Attend quarterly firearms training and other annual training as assigned.
