About The Position

Wofford College is seeking professional, service-oriented individuals to join the Campus Safety Department as a Campus Safety Officer on the Night Shift. Campus Safety Officers serve as armed security officers licensed through the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) and play a critical role in protecting students, faculty, staff, visitors, and college property. Officers provide a visible security presence, conduct proactive patrols, secure campus facilities, respond to emergencies, enforce college policies and applicable laws, assist community members, and support a safe learning environment through professionalism, vigilance, sound judgment, and exceptional customer service. Campus Safety Officers work closely with students, faculty, staff, visitors, local law enforcement, emergency medical services, and fire personnel to ensure a safe and secure campus environment 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • South Carolina voter registration card (required for SLED licensing).
  • Ability to legally possess and carry a firearm.
  • Ability to successfully pass all required background investigations and screening requirements.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, overtime assignments, and special events.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in stressful and rapidly evolving situations.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior military service.
  • Prior law enforcement experience.
  • Prior campus safety, security, corrections, emergency management, fire service, or emergency medical experience.
  • Associate's degree or higher.
  • Current public safety certifications.

Responsibilities

  • Provide for public safety by maintaining order and protecting students, faculty, staff, visitors, and college property.
  • Conduct proactive patrols of assigned areas and the campus as a whole by foot, golf cart, bicycle, and patrol vehicle.
  • Respond to calls for service, emergencies, alarms, suspicious activity, accidents, and incidents.
  • Open, close, inspect, and secure campus buildings, facilities, gates, doors, and access points.
  • Monitor surveillance systems and security equipment.
  • Investigate suspicious activity and criminal incidents with the goal of crime prevention and offender apprehension.
  • Enforce applicable federal, state, and local laws, campus regulations, and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Exercise arrest authority in accordance with applicable laws and departmental policy.
  • Complete incident reports, daily reports, medical reports, work orders, and other required documentation.
  • Respond to medical emergencies and provide first aid, CPR, AED, Stop the Bleed, and other emergency assistance within the scope of training.
  • Assist with fire alarms, severe weather incidents, disasters, utility emergencies, and other emergency situations.
  • Identify, correct when possible, and report safety and security hazards.
  • Provide safety escorts and transportation assistance when requested.
  • Direct traffic and provide crowd management for athletic events, ceremonies, campus programs, and special events.
  • Assist motorists, visitors, students, faculty, and staff.
  • Escort money transfers and other sensitive assets when requested.
  • Maintain positive public relations while representing the Campus Safety Department and Wofford College.
  • Submit work orders for damaged, malfunctioning, or unsafe equipment and facilities.
  • Maintain accountability and operational readiness of assigned equipment.
  • Follow officer safety procedures and maintain situational awareness at all times.
  • Participate in crime prevention, community engagement, and campus safety initiatives.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisors, Sergeants, or the Director of Campus Safety.
