About The Position

Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) is seeking a Campus Police Officer for its location in Worcester, MA. This role is open to both experienced officers and candidates looking to start a career in public safety and law enforcement, with entry-level candidates encouraged to apply. WPI will sponsor selected candidates through the full Massachusetts police academy. The officer will be responsible for protecting life and property on the WPI campus and surrounding areas, responding to emergencies, investigating incidents, and enforcing state laws and WPI regulations. This position is assigned to the third shift (overnight/midnight hours).

Requirements

  • Must be at least 21 years of age at time of hire to meet MA requirements for the License to Carry and police academy admission.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Massachusetts driver's license.
  • Dependable, honest, and able to communicate clearly with a wide range of people.
  • Able to stay calm under pressure, think quickly, and use good judgment.
  • Physically fit and able to complete the full Massachusetts police academy if not already certified.
  • Willing to obtain a Massachusetts firearm license and pass firearms qualification using the weapon issued by the WPI Police Department, plus any required in-service training.
  • Certified candidates must hold an active POST certification and have a clean disciplinary record.
  • All candidates must pass a thorough background investigation and CORI check.
  • Upon preliminary offer, candidates must complete and pass a full medical exam, drug testing, and psychological exam.

Responsibilities

  • Protect life and property on the WPI campus and the surrounding area.
  • Respond to emergency calls including crimes in progress, medical emergencies, fire and intrusion alarms, and accidents.
  • Investigate, document, and write reports.
  • Patrol campus buildings and grounds on foot and in vehicles.
  • Provide everyday public safety services like escorts and lock-out assists, treating every member of the community with respect.
  • Promote crime prevention and safety awareness across campus.
  • Enforce Massachusetts state law and WPI safety, security, and traffic regulations.
  • Take proper police action at scenes, administer first aid, gather and preserve evidence, interview witnesses and suspects, and testify in court when needed.
  • Performs all other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor.
