About The Position

Help tell the story of America's longest war. As Campaign and Media Director, you'll shape how the nation hears the Afghanistan War Commission's findings on two decades of U.S. decisions in Afghanistan, leading a high-profile campaign from launch through the release of the Commission's final report to Congress. The Campaign and Media Director leads the full range of strategic communications, public engagement, digital, content, event, media monitoring, and data visualization support for the Afghanistan War Commission. The Director helps the Commission reach the media, key stakeholders, and the public, with emphasis on the rollout of the Commission's final report to Congress. The Director works collaboratively with Commission staff to ensure all work products meet the needs of the Commission, Commissioners, and staff. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Proficiency with WordPress platforms and interactive or illustrative approaches to large-scale data visualization.
  • At least 6 years' demonstrated ability in media relations, content production (written, video, digital, graphic), event management, media training, and media analysis.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience engaging the U.S. military, national security agencies, Congress, veterans communities, and national and international media.
  • Knowledge of and connections within the Afghanistan War, military affairs, veterans affairs, and foreign policy communities. The Director should be able to use these to launch the AWC's media presence quickly and effectively.
  • In-depth understanding of national security and foreign policy audiences, and command of current communications technologies and best practices.

Responsibilities

  • Work with AWC senior staff to develop and execute the Commission's national security–focused media messaging strategy, including social media engagement.
  • Advise senior staff on the Government's use of social media platforms, including which platforms are restricted and how each platform retains and preserves data.
  • Recommend and facilitate engagement with media outlets to promote the final report and other releases and events before and after the report's release.
  • Provide expert counsel on brand development, public positioning, visibility, reputation risk management, and media engagement.
  • Research specific articles, reporters, and outlets as needed.
  • Lead the design and development of an enhanced AWC website and online presence so users can easily access and navigate the lengthy final report and collateral materials. This work draws on WordPress, UX/UI and web design, and interactive approaches to large-scale data visualization.
  • Post on, edit, and otherwise manage AWC social media accounts at the direction of senior staff.
  • Track social media analytics and advise on growing followers and improving visibility.
  • Prepare, coordinate, and execute digital newsletter and social media campaigns for public awareness, data collection (as approved by senior staff), and event notifications.
  • Oversee the production of video, digital, and graphic materials such as infographics.
  • Prepare media materials, including press kits, background materials, press releases, talking points, and presentations.
  • Advise on and provide technical support for the final report publication, including writing, editing, design, and formatting.
  • Plan, execute, and facilitate hearings, press conferences, interviews, podcasts, conferences, forums, roundtables, media availabilities, and other public events.
  • Respond to media inquiries and schedule interviews.
  • Help track compliance with the AWC's Media and Publication guidelines.
  • Provide media training for Commissioners and Commission staff.
  • Alert AWC staff to breaking news relevant to the Commission's work and prepare response advice as needed.
  • Provide regular media updates and summaries of relevant news, trends, and articles, as directed by senior staff.
  • Measure and analyze coverage of the AWC across traditional, social, and other media, using parameters set by the overall communications strategy.
  • Oversee the creation of accurate, innovative charts, graphs, dashboards, timelines, maps, and other visuals for print and digital use, based on AWC data and guidance.
  • Manage an intensive editing process with AWC, incorporating and reconciling frequent changes and independently validating visualization integrity.
  • Coordinate with the AWC's designated print report publisher to integrate finalized visualizations.
