About The Position

The Camp Instructor will educate and supervise a class of children in a day camp setting, implementing humane education and science-based curriculum. This role involves attending to the safety and wellbeing of animals, clients, and volunteers, organizing setup and cleanup of program spaces, and monitoring children's interaction with live animals using positive group management techniques. The instructor will also supervise and direct teenage volunteer aides and interact positively with clients. The position requires a commitment to 1 week of training from Monday-Friday, May 25-29, and 8-10 out of 12 weeks of camp from June 1-August 21, with a maximum of 3 consecutive working weeks followed by a light or off week.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Minimum high school diploma
  • Experience teaching and supervising children ages 4-12 years in classroom or group environment
  • Upbeat attitude, enthusiastic personality and a strong sense of professionalism
  • Knowledge of interpretive techniques, learning styles, and child development stages
  • Ability to use positive techniques for handling disruptive people of any age
  • Ability to be flexible with unplanned changes to presentations
  • Strong written and verbal skills
  • Public speaking skills
  • Ability to commit to 1 week of training from Mon-Fri 5/25-5/29
  • Ability to commit to 8-10 out of 12 weeks of camp from June 1-August 21st
  • Ability to work at most 3 weeks in a row and then a light or off week

Nice To Haves

  • Experience handling small mammals, birds, invertebrates, amphibians, reptiles, and hoof stock
  • Experience teaching outdoor, humane, or zoo education classes
