About The Position

The Camp Director is responsible for planning, organizing, and supervising all camp operations and youth programs including implementing, monitoring and evaluating Camp activities that focus on Yakama Nation wellness, recreational activities, natural resources, conservation, outdoor experiences and cultural teachings. Responsibilities include providing overall leadership, supervision, and guidance to the Camp Chaparral staff and coordinating programs that will host workshops and activities at Camp Chaparral during camp ensuring the children and staff are safe, secure, and have appropriate and adequate food, supplies, and materials and is enjoyable for the children and also appropriate for the age and developmental levels of the children. Camp Chaparral staff training will often take place in mid-July every year. The three (3) camp sessions are tentatively scheduled during the last two weeks of July and the first week of August. The Camp Director will be required to remain onsite, including overnight accommodation, throughout all scheduled camp sessions.

Requirements

  • At least one season of Camp Administrative experience (i.e. director, specialist, or lead staff member) or experience working in an administrative leadership position.
  • Required to pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • Required to pass a pre-employment drug test.
  • Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's License with the ability to obtain a Tribal Driver Permit with Defensive Driving Course certificate (to be updated every 2 years).
  • Must have current First Aid/CPR card or ability to obtain one upon hire.
  • Must have current Food Handler's Card or ability to obtain one upon hire.
  • Must be mature and stable in behavior and judgment.
  • Must be drug, alcohol, and tobacco free.
  • No history of child abuse and/or neglect.
  • No history of domestic violence.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Recreation, Education, Youth Development, or related field.
  • Knowledge of the Yakama Reservation closed area with Traditional background.
  • Yakama enrolled preference, but all qualified applicants are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

  • All time will be spent at camp during the duration of Camp Chaparral.
  • Be active and visible in the implementation of all camp activities.
  • Facilitate and ensure the planning, organizing, implementing, and monitoring continuity of the camp weekly and daily activities and schedules.
  • Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate camp counselors and volunteers.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of all campers and staff.
  • Develop age-appropriate recreational, educational, and leadership activities.
  • Manage camp operations, supplies, and budget.
  • Communicate with parents/guardians regarding camper needs and behavior.
  • Enforce camp policies, procedures, and emergency protocols and respond appropriately to emergencies and behavioral concerns.
  • Maintain accurate attendance, incident, and health records.
  • Organize staff meetings and training sessions.
  • Promote positive youth development and inclusion.
  • Coordinate special events, field trips, and outdoor activities.
  • Approve requisitions for activity supplies and materials for camp.
  • Monitor the financial budget and fund development operations to allow for adequate annual funding and to meet long term goals.
  • Monitor budget for the camp operations, staffing, repairs, and maintenance.
  • Coordinate with the Bookkeepers to ensure all receipts for purchases are itemized and signed by the correct person responsible for the purchasing and/or picking up of the item(s) from vendors needed for Camp.
  • Develop and implement an inventory system for all supplies, i.e., materials, food, and food supplies, furniture, equipment, vehicles, and any item that is taken to camp and/or stored after camp.
  • Complete a physical inventory of all camp facilities including equipment items to be left at camp.
  • Facilitate the setup and maintenance of the generator to ensure that fuel deliveries are made timely and that the equipment operates properly.
  • Communicate regularly with Facility Management for any needs of the generator.
  • Arrange communication system and potential needed assistance from Yakama Nation Police Department, Game Wardens, and Yakama Nation Wildlife Programs when there is possible endangerment to a child, staff, member of the general population or wild animals (i.e. bears and cougars).
  • Ensure that Camp Maintenance staff monitor garbage dumpsters, ensure garbage area is organized and establish rules and procedures for garbage dumping and collections so that wild animals (bears) will be discouraged from garbage site.
  • Ensure that Camp maintenance staff monitor the water system to ensure that Camp Chaparral will have sage, potable water throughout its water system where needed.
  • Communicate with the Bookkeepers and Facility Management to arrange for any needed repairs to water system through the camp.
  • Ensure that Yakama Nation Tribal Maintenance Water and Sewer test water regularly throughout the duration of camp.
  • Review and understand the Food Service Program funding by the United States Department of Agriculture.
  • Ensure the total food service program is in compliance with the USDA requirements in collaboration with the Food Service Manager.
  • With assistance from identified specialized resource people, plan and write an emergency evacuation plan for the children and staff.
  • Define and monitor crisis management plan, including emergency procedures verifying an emergency radio system or satellite phone system is in place for such emergencies.
  • Arrange for yearly inspections of Camp through the Tribal Health Director and other essential leadership (TAD, Tribal Council, etc.); by YN Facilities and follow up to ensure correction to any noted deficiencies.
  • Ensure applicable safety, sanitation and hygiene requirements and standards are followed in all areas where applicable.
  • Organize and implement review of applicants for staff positions including, to extent possible, background checks on applicants for drug & alcohol abuse, child abuse, & neglect; domestic violence utilizing the Human Resources Department.
  • Responsible for the overall staff selection through the recruitment process and authority to make decisions regarding disciplinary actions up to and including termination.
  • Coordinate and plan for orientation and training for all staff prior to the beginning of the first day of Camp session and will include: Camp safety, rules and expectations. Provide information on dealing with campers, difficult campers, and possible arduous situations. Daily, Weekly, and Full Camp Schedule. CPR and First Aide Training (as applicable). Food Handlers Card (as applicable). Evacuation and Emergency Plans. Any other topics which will help staff work more appropriately with campers and each other.
  • Responsible for the overall planning and organizing review of children's application and assignment of children to cabins, counselors, and camp sessions.
  • Communicate appropriately with parents and staff regarding the special needs for any participants.
  • Prepare and arrange for participants and staff to be transported to and from camp sessions in advance as well as any field trips during camp sessions to ensure prudent use of program funds for mileage, gas and staff time in accordance with Yakama Nation policies and procedures.
  • Consolidate trips out of camp for program and supplies to minimize amount of travel time, reduce travel expenses, and minimize the risk of accidents en route.
  • Ensure all vehicles are safe and maintained.
  • Maintains documentation of camp schedule, activities, and incidents that will be used for the annual report, manage property development, and maintenance needs to ensure stewardship of current resources and identification of future needs.
  • Prepare Annual and long-term property plan for the Yakama Nation General Council and/or Yakama Nation HEW Committee, when necessary, to report on camp activities and/or situations.
  • Coordinate with Yakama Nation Tribal Health to secure a nursing staff person to work during the Camp Chaparral Season.
  • Perform other duties as assigned and needed.
