About The Position

Tohkomeupog is a residential summer camp located at the edge of the White Mountain National Forest in New Hampshire. Camp provides outdoor opportunities for boys having completed grades 2 through 10, with a program designed to progress with the boys over consecutive summers. Session lengths range from 2 to 6 weeks. In general, camp staff members are hired for the duration of the 7-week summer season, including orientation week. Camp Counselors at Tohkomeupog play a key role in the creation and presentation of the camp experience for the benefit of their campers.

  • Working as a staff member at a residential camp requires unwavering commitment toward the well-being of the campers who are trusted to our care.
  • Ability to meet the time requirements of the camp season
  • Desire to work with young boys in a residential setting
  • Willingness to consent to required background screening, which is a standard expectation of the camping industry.
  • Open-minded / Compassionate
  • Patient / Tolerant
  • Physically able to meet the demands of the job. Camp is an extremely physical environment
  • Ability to work independently and also as part of a team

Responsibilities

  • Cabin Supervisor – a counselor at Tohkomeupog is directly responsible for the well-being of the boys living within his cabin group.
  • Work to create an environment that will feel safe and supportive for each individual, while encouraging a sense of “family”
  • Act as a mentor or “big brother” to campers, offering general guidance as they learn to maneuver a close-quartered living community.
  • Activity Instructor – a counselor at Tohkomeupog may instruct a variety of activities, including campcraft, nature, boating, archery, sports and swimming among others.

  • Track the progress of participants
  • Maintain equipment and facilities
  • Provide for the safety of his campers
  • Trip Leader – a counselor at Tohkomeupog will lead overnight camping adventures which may include hiking, canoeing, mountain biking and/or rock climbing, dependent upon the camper group involved.
  • Assist with the planning and preparation of various camping adventures
  • Assure that campers are appropriately prepared for the adventure of their choosing
  • Guide campers in a better understanding of self-sufficiency in the wilderness environment
  • Promote a sense of appreciation and respect for the natural world
  • Provide for the safety of his campers
