About The Position

The Lighthouse of Houston is hiring a Camp Counselor for its summer program lasting around six weeks starting in June. Please see qualifications below and quality if you meet the job requirements: Job Summary: Provides quality seasonal day camp experience for blind and low vision school aged children ages 5-12 years by teaching values, ensuring safety and facilitating structured play and educational activities with the children, in accordance with state requirements and LOH policy. Assist with providing a program that focuses on youth development, including the LOH values. Mission: To enable and empower people who are blind or low vision to realize their full potential. Department: Youth and Adult Programs Hourly Rate: $13.00 to $15.00 Summer Camp Dates: June to July (lasting around 6 weeks) Hours: 15 hours a week - 3 days a week, 5 hours a day

Requirements

Qualification: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. High School diploma or general education degree (GED).
At least 18 years of age.
CPR, First Aid, and child abuse prevention trainings.
Must complete and pass criminal background and finger print check.
Education and/ or Experience High school diploma or general education degree (GED) with demonstrated interested in the welfare of children; prior childcare or babysitting experience is preferred.
Language Skills Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in on-on-one and small groups situation to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
Reasoning Ability Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one-or-two- step instructions. Ability to deal with standardized situation with only occasional or no variables.
License and Certifications required: Texas Driver’s License, CPR & First Aid.
Physical Demands While preforming the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, and/ or feel objects, tools, and/or controls; climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl. The employee frequency required to reach with hands and arms and taste and smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or have ability to physically manage and support children when needed for safety in general camp activities (child weighting 50-200 pounds).

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in indoor and outdoor weather conditions. Nonsmoking and drug and alcohol-free work environment. Cell phone usage is prohibited while supervising the children. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, occasionally loud. The job is working for the LOH Day Youth Camp program located at 3602 W. Dallas St. The Youth Program is a HHSC licensed program for blind and low vision school aged children 5-10 years of age.

Previous experience working with children in a day camp setting preferred.

Responsibilities

Directly supervises a group of children. Ratio: 1:5 – 5-year-old, 1:10 – 6-12-year-old
Plans and implements program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate and consistent with LOH policies and procedures.
Facilitates both formal and informal play in an indoor and outdoor environment.
Adheres to program standards including safety and cleanliness standards.
Maintains the program site and equipment, assist with the set-up and breakdown of activity centers and cleaning of the program areas.
Maintain required program records.
Assist in maintaining accurate program records including, but not limited to, incident reports and daily attendance.
Identify and respond to campers in a positive manner.
Maintains a positive relation and communication with children, parents, and other staff.
Makes sound decisions in alignment with LOH polices and state standards.
Know and understand ALL emergency procedures associated with the camp program.
Know, enforce, and follow all safety guidelines associated with the camp and all programs areas. This includes but not limited to being responsible for your camper’s safety and their whereabouts at all times
Attends and participates in programs activities, staff meetings, and staff trainings.
Reports suspicious and inappropriate behavior and policy violations.
Follows mandated abuse and incident reporting requirements
Ensure youth are properly signed in and signed out, ensures only authorized adults are allowed in the facility, with ID checks daily etc. adheres to polices related to boundaries with each child.
Ensures unused rooms and closets remain locked; routinely monitors high risk locations(bathrooms), etc.
Meets timeless and deadlines related to supporting system and employee compliance.
Must attend a mandatory 40-hour pre-training program prior to working with the children.
Other duties as assigned.
