Camp Counselor
About The Position
Under the direction of the Program Coordinator, the Camp Counselor ensures the health and safety of 1–3 assigned campers during camp sessions at the YMCA Camp Wigi site. Camps take place in December, March, and August; the December and March sessions are held on weekends, and the August session lasts a full week. The counselor engages campers in planned activities, adjusts activities as needed, supports personal care and daily living, and promotes a positive, respectful, person-centered environment. Reports may be required to document camper activities, behavioral incidents, or other notable events.
Requirements
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must have a high school diploma or GED.
- Must be able to pass a drug screening and background check.
Responsibilities
- Ensure the health and safety of 1–3 assigned campers during camp sessions.
- Engage campers in daily planned activities, improvise, and adjust activities when needed.
- Provide assistance with personal care and hygiene while encouraging independence and self-care as appropriate.
- Assist with activities of daily living, including toileting, bathing, ambulating, transfers, feeding, and dressing.
- Interact with people supported in a respectful, age-appropriate, and culturally appropriate manner, and respect their preferences and requests.
- Help teach, coordinate, and carry out planned activities.
- Promote a positive environment.
- Model and promote person-centered practices and respectful interactions with all people.
- Treat people supported, staff, customers, and visitors with professionalism, courtesy, and respect.
- Complete reports as required to document camper activities, behavioral incidents, or other notable events.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
